The Pinecrest boys' soccer team defeated the Seventy First Falcons 6-2 Wednesday night in Fayetteville to cap off the final season of play in the Mid-Southeastern Conference. The Patriots finished undefeated at 12-0, conference champions for the 12th straight year and improving their overall record to 15-2-3. Only one game remains for Coach Larry Martin's side before the state 4A tournament begins, the Patriots hosting playoff-bound East Chapel Hill at 7 p.m. at the John Williams Athletic Center. Pinecrest, which will host a first-round playoff game next week, scored two goals in the opening 10 minutes only to see the Falcons fight back on their senior night. Patriot junior Dylan Cole set up the first goal just five minutes into the match when he sent a pass downfield to senior John Kropp. Kropp found space on the left wing and curled a shot over the keeper's reach to give the Pats a 1-0 lead. Senior Matt Carriker would add the first of his two goals five minutes later as he received a pass from classmate Brandon Wilkins. Seventy-First narrowed the margin to 2-1 at 20 minutes as a long throw-in was redirected past Patriots keeper Lewis Cable. Pinecrest answered right back when Carriker netted his second goal of the night on an assist from Ryan Osterman. Seventy-First trimmed the lead to 3-2, before Tyler Herbst pushed the lead to 4-2 when he directed a header from Max Brenner into the net. Early in the second half Thomas Goulden scored off an assist from Kropp, and Eric Parziale converted a penalty kick to provide the final margin. <-Previous 10-15-08 vs Jack Britt (W, 3-1) 10-24-08 vs East Chapel Hill (W, 3-0) Next-> |
