| A raucous Pinecrest crowd chanted, "overtime, overtime," as the final horn sounded, ending the soccer match between Pinecrest and Union Pines in a scoreless draw. It was the second year in a row the teams have battled to a tie in the cross-county rivalry game. "I wish we had won so bad," said Union Pines senior forward Jake Waits. Pinecrest head coach Larry Martin said after the game that discussions would be held to consider playing overtime next year if the teams tie again. Last year the team's played to a 1-all draw. Friday, the Patriots (13-2-2) dominated ball possession during the game. Their controlled passing game resulted in several scoring chances, but each time the Viking defense and goalkeeper Aaron Moore were up to the task. "We knew it would be a staunch defensive struggle," Moore said afterward the game. With two minutes remaining in the first half, Patriot Aaron Stroker took a pass from Tyler Herbst and broke down the right sideline toward the Viking goal. Stroker ripped a low shot to the far post. The ball eluded a sprawling Moore and slid just wide of the frame. With time winding down in the first half, Stroker fed a pass to an onrushing Sam Ivey. The pass tied Ivey up at the Viking goal line and he failed to direct a shot on goal with just 12 second left in the half. With seven minutes left in the game, Moore punched away a shot by junior Thomas Goulden, who had beaten two defenders. "We dominated the game," said Pinecrest senior Eric Parziale, "but we couldn't get a quality scoring chance. "I think if Union Pines would have got that one goal we would have been energized, but if we had got the goal our momentum would have carried us to a couple more." Union Pines (13-2-1) took a defensive posture much of the game, packing players back in its defensive half of the field and attempting to disrupt the Patriot passing game and then counterattack. The Vikings' best scoring opportunities came in the first half courtesy of the speedy Cha brothers -- Allan, David and Va. With 14 minutes gone in the first half, Allen Cha took a direct kick and blistered a ball toward the Patriot net with teammate Ben McMichael on the doorstep, but he was unable to direct the ball on net. "They're a good team, they played well," Martin said.
