PATRIOT SOCCER SUFFERS FIRST LOSS
By Dean Parziale, Special to The Pilot, Appeared Sunday, September 14th, 2008
Leesville Road punished the Pinecrest boys soccer team for some early mistakes Friday night as the Pride handed the Patriots a 5-2 defeat at the John Williams Athletic Center.
The match-up between two teams ranked in the state top 20 was quickly decided as Leesville poured in 3 goals in the first 11 minutes. The loss was Pinecrest's first of the season and dropped the Patriots to 5-1-1 overall.
Leesville Coach Chip Stone was impressed with the atmosphere and fan turnout.
"It was like a playoff game, we never play before crowds that size, it's a great setting and we would love to return here next year."
Pinecrest Coach Larry Martin was optimistic despite the final outcome.
"The scoreline doesn't reflect the quality of the match, if you chopped off the first 11 minutes it was a tight, well-played, entertaining game," Martin said, "There are so many lessons we take away from playing teams at this level of competition, and we've got ranked teams scheduled every week, by playoff time we'll be a quality side." Pinecrest has two Mid-Southeastern conference games this week to prepare before hosting another top 20-ranked team, JT Hoggard High School of Wilmington Friday night.
Leesville would find a variety of ways to score in the first half, two well placed hot shots from 25 yards out, a beautiful end line cross and volley finish and a keeper miscue would result in the 4-0 halftime score.
Pinecrest generated plenty of scoring opportunities in the first half but did not have the finishing touch Leesville clearly demonstrated.
The Pride pushed the lead to 5-0 five minutes into the second half. From there the Patriots took control.
In the 69th minute a Pride defender took down Patriot senior Matt Carriker in the penalty area to give the home team a penalty kick. Senior Eric Paziale converted on the attempt to cut the lead to 5-1.
Four minutes later Carriker threaded a pass to Junior Ryan Osterman who outworked two defenders and the keeper to find the back of net and narrow the gap to 5-2.
Pinecrest peppered the Leesville keeper with shots in the dying minutes of the game, but failed to score.
