~ MISSION STATEMENT ~

To assist all in need of understanding Post Combat Stress Disorder "PCSD" (or Combat PTSD) by way of an informative, comprehensive website which sponsors two compelling PTSD books, by one who has suffered through the ravages of this serious, life-ruining or life-ending disorder.
PCSD - Definition: a very serious psychological disorder resulting from the direct clash of arms; the individual active participation in intense, prolonged, highly contested battle on one or more military operations; i.e. direct engagement in the raw, bitter, bloody nature of war.
Through awareness and long overdue fairness, it is hoped that justice will be served by the awarding of the Purple Heart Medal to all who suffer grievously from Post Combat Stress Disorder. We are not seeking individual praise or recognition. We are seeking healing by bringing honor, understanding and acceptance instead of scorn, shame and shunning, to those who suffer endlessly for the freedom of our people and nation.
PCSD victims, never forget, at Griffin's Lair no one stands alone! Out of many we are strong, proud and bound. We are an undefeatable...

The more combat one sees, the more (tours) battle stars one has, the more combat awards and valor medals earned... the more likely one's chance of developing PTSD becomes and the degree of severity increases!
THERE SHOULD BE NO DOUBT - if a warrior is awarded the Purple Heart for a physical wound and/or a valor medal for actions against enemies of the USA on the field of battle, common sense dictates it must be considered presumptive evidence that the warrior's Combat PTSD originates from said enemy action! Under such circumstances the Purple Heart Medal for Combat PTSD is richly deserved and should be awarded!

POST-COMBAT STRESS DISORDER

(the word trauma is inherent in the term combat)

PCSD - Definition: (worth repeating) a very serious psychological disorder resulting from the direct clash of arms; the individual active participation in intense, prolonged, highly contested battle on one or more military operations; i.e. direct engagement in the raw, bitter, bloody nature of war.
This does not preclude just "hunkering down" from enemy action, hearing it over a unit radio or just witnessing some of the resulting carnage of combat operations. There is a big difference in the terminology of “We killed the bear.” versus “I killed the bear!” Examples - it does not include the unloading of "body bags" in a safe rear area after a fire-fight or the mere “loading of bombs on planes.” If the latter activity resulted in an explosion that the person witnessed or was maimed as a result of… that could possibly result in a diagnosis of “Post Traumatic Stress Disorder”... to some degree. Victims of natural disasters, violent crime and car accidents would also fall into this category.
It takes seven people to keep one man in combat. That does not necessarily make all of them a

"COMBAT VETERAN!"
PCSD - DOWN TO THE BARE FACTS!

~ SOLDIERS - WAR - POLITICS ~

SOLDIERS - warriors belong to "A BAND OF BROTHERS." Their dedication, protection and support of each other are paramount and vital! Individuals interacting on a daily basis together... in small units such as a squad, develop the "tightest bond." All depends on this undesignated, but considered near sacred, informal unit. This "banding" doctrine extends from the smallest to the largest formal units as their very survival depends on each other in major combat situations.
WAR - it starts for the band when the first brother is killed or wounded. That loss becomes their primary "cause" and supersedes all other reasons for their participating in the war. For the band there is no substitute for victory! If they do not "win"... the loss of their brothers, their extreme, exhausting efforts, and at times, inhuman conditions, their severe deprivations, sufferings, enduring of foreign diseases, bloody sacrifices, as well as their many worries are... all for nothing!
POLITICS - if forced to abandon their cause (loss of blood/brother) because of weak-kneed politicians or lack of support by the American public, THAT DEGRADING ORDER will cause severe depression and become a major factor complicating severe combat PTSD... PTSD that your warrior/veteran will never overcome... EVER! Additionally, in their minds, betrayal by politicians and lack of support on their HOMEFRONT strips them of their honor as a band and steals their dignity as an individual! Do not do this to them, they do not deserve it! You ask them to accept the possibility of making the supreme sacrifice... loss of life and/or limb and put them in harms way. They accept their sworn duty... courageously, vigorously and wholeheartedly and complete their missions successfully! There is nothing they will not accomplish or endure for YOU and OUR NATION! They have always done what they are asked to do! When they receive news from home the last thing they want to hear is that their nation and the public is war-weary! What a wimpy thing to say to those you expect and demand constant, repetitive heroism from... think about it! DO NOT DENY THEM THEIR VICTORY AND HONOR! Our people must realize that the only way WE will win against guerilla warfare and terrorism is by becoming one nation under God! We must all become a patriotic, dedicated, tireless, gallant member of... "A BAND OF BROTHERS!"

About "Grif" Peter S. Griffin

Paratrooper ~ Police Officer ~ Author ~ Poet ~ Webmaster
And yes, a Hemophiliac!

"Grif" enlisted in the U.S. Army on 13 March 1964 (AGE-17) and was honorably discharged on 10 March 1967, attaining the rank of SP/4. His unit assignments were Company A, 2/502nd Infantry, 101st Airborne Division (Vietnam July 1965 - June 1966) and Company C, 2/505th Infantry, 82nd Airborne Division. On Memorial Day weekend, 1998, he was inducted into the 502nd Infantry Distinguished Members of the Regiment, Halls of Fame, in a ceremony at Ft. Campbell, Kentucky. He served on the 101st Airborne Association, Fort Campbell, Kentucky Monument Committee, helping to establish a Division Monument to honor all Screaming Eagles, past, present and future. He is a "Boat Person", arriving in Viet Nam on board the "U.S.N.S. GENERAL LEROY ELTINGE", 29 July 1965. (The 1st Brigade of the 101st Airborne operated separately until 1968, when the rest of the division arrived. It was the last all paratrooper unit of the 101st to engage an enemy on the battlefield.)
After discharge he attended the Police Academy at Syracuse, New York and served as a Police Officer in Oswego, New York from 1968-78. He also attended the State University of New York (SUNY) @ Oswego, completing several public justice, psychology, sociology and civil liberty courses.

His military decorations include: the Viet Nam Service Medal with two bronze battle stars, the Silver Star Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the Republic of Viet Nam Campaign Medal with device (1960), the Republic of Viet Nam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, the Presidential Unit Citation with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Valorous Unit Citation, the Meritorious Unit Citation, the Parachute Badge, the Army Republic of Vietnam Paratrooper Badge, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Recondo Patch, the National Defense Service Medal and the Expert Rifleman Badge. He recently received the Conspicuous Service Star with three accoutrements and the Conspicuous Service Cross from the State of New York for his patriotic service.

Two of his brothers were also paratroopers. The oldest, "Jackie" was killed in action while serving with Company G, 2/187th ARCT in heavy fighting two days after jumping in behind enemy lines at Munsan-ni, South Korea in March of 1951. His brother, "Billy" was an "Atomic Veteran" who served with Company A, 1/188th PIR, 11th Airborne Division. Billy and the brave men of his outfit participated in "Operation Buster/Jangle" at Camp Desert Rock, Nevada in 1951. They were the first soldiers to be exposed to several nuclear test detonations in close support of ground troops.
"Grif" married Brenda Gibson in 1967. They are blessed with daughter Pamela, and son, Brent. They are the proud grandparents of three lovely granddaughters Emilie, Meaghan, and Georgia, as well as grandson, Connor. (Meet them at Grif's childrens website, "TARA'S TALE, The Wood Witch of Mineral Springs.") Pete and Brenda have resided in The Great State of North Carolina for the past 30 years.
Besides "putting the spotlight" on Combat PTSD via "Griffin's Lair", his interests include American history... especially the Civil War, collecting antiques, refinishing old furniture, spending time with his dogs, mountain trout fishing, writing and colonial coin collecting. In addition to his two books Grif's writings have appeared in several military magazines and newspapers including "THE SCREAMING EAGLE”, “THE FIRST SCREAMING EAGLES IN VIETNAM”, “THE AIRBORNE QUARTERLY” and the 101ST AIRBORNE DIVISION (2nd edition) by Turner Publishing Company.

GRIF IS NO PROFESSIONAL, HES' JUST A “HAS BEEN!”
HOW CAN HE HELP CHANGE ANYTHING?

That's right, he is just a “has been”... an old, battles past, combat veteran, but he wants to try! He does not have a PhD in psychology or psychiatry… or any degree, for that matter, but he has been through much for his fellow countrymen and nation. He has been through the terrible sorrow of losing a close family member to battle. He has been through the tough rigors of training to become a dirt-level infantryman and dedicated paratrooper. He has been through some of the most highly contested combat fought in the steamy, stench-filled jungles of South-East Asia. He has been through the sweats, temporary blindness, suffering and worry of a near lethal bout with malaria. He has been through many years of service patrolling the streets of his hometown as a police officer. He has been through the heartbreak of seeing those he protected spit and curse at him for being a veteran of America’s most unpopular war and for being a “pig” at student protest rallies. He has been through much suffering after being near fatally injured in the line of duty. He has been subjected to years of unrelenting discrimination and harassment in the work place after the diagnosis of hemophilia was discovered during treatment of the police injury. He has been through many years of suffering from undiagnosed and untreated severe COMBAT Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. He has been through severe depression and the self-destructive hell of the “undoing of character” because of the lack of said treatment. After being reduced to self-employment as a barber, he has been called an "animal" for being awarded a valor medal in Vietnam (presented 29 years late), and then called "sick" for wanting to deck the SOB who said it! Finally, after more than two decades of struggling on his own, he has been through buckets of medication and years of counseling by several dedicated, caring Veterans Administration mental health professionals. He has been through years of transforming his experiences… that is, his thoughts, memories and tears into cathartic prose and poetry to help himself become and stay "a good man"; and to help his fellow veterans suffering from Combat PTSD. He has been through the trials, hooks, crooks and frustrations of just being a “has been” nobody trying to learn the ways of the computer, post a thought-provoking website, write and publish two compelling books to fulfill his desire to assist his fellow Vietnam veterans and our nation's new generation of courageous anti-terrorist warriors. He does not want them to have to go through the hellish misery and confusion he has been through trying to "put the war behind him."
Now... he patiently and prayerfully looks forward in hope to the day when he will be able to say that he HAS BEEN, in some small way, instrumental in bringing peace and contentment to some of those heroic men and women who gave, and still give, so very much in keeping our nation and our people free; America’s brave GIs and combat veterans!

Griffin's Lair is proud to present a COMBAT PTSD/Paratrooper theme that promotes patriotism by honoring America's veterans, armed forces, Gold Star Mothers, our fallen heroes and all who suffer from the ravages of Post Combat Stress Disorder. This presentation features heartfelt poetry, true combat experiences, military history, and military related links of excellence.
Griffin's Lair also promotes the poignant Anthology of War, Death and Remembrance, ©"Thoughts, Memories and Tears", and the compelling, epic autobiography, ©"When You Hear The Bugle Call", subtitled Battling PTSD and the Unraveling of the American Conscience, both authored by Peter S. Griffin, "Grif".
Both books were written to benefit combat veterans agonized by severe and chronic PCSD. Their intention is to help these brave veterans, their loved ones (Secondary PCSD) and true friends, as well as the general public, to better understand this devastating, potentially disastrous psychological, mechanical, and common response to repeated, life threatening situations.
All PTSD victims... police, fire, rescue, EMT, doctors, nurses, security, first responders of all kinds, as well as terror and natural catastrophe victims would benefit by reading both of these heartfelt and caring presentations.
As for my military counterparts, fellow police officers and all public service related PTSD victims... a sincere well done! Thank you for your brave service to our nation's colors and for risking all so others may live... in freedom and safety! God bless you!
All accounts were written in the indomitable, unflinching Airborne spirit... No matter where, no matter when, no matter the enemy, no matter the odds, no matter the weather, no matter public support... No matter Post Combat Stress Disorder!
"The Lair" is a no-nonsense, God-fearing website. It is definitely NOT "Politically Correct!" So if you are a liberal, your visit here will really be hell, despite the fact that The Lair will bring you and all visitors "To Hell and Back!"
PCSD, like war itself, is a fight for survival. In both "Lair" PCSD books, as well as the many compelling pages of "The Lair" itself, I present cathartic words and works for both you and me. All subject matter is presented through true, precise, poignant and thought provoking passages to foster interest, understanding and enlightenment of PCSD, the military mind-set, military life, military training and the combat experience... i.e. getting inside the "military mind." "There is the right way, the wrong way and the military way"... implement method, manner and expediency to best accomplish the task at hand efficiently, proficiently, at acceptable cost, without question or discussion as soon as possible, i.e. ASAP! In other words... SHUT UP AND GET 'ER DONE, NOW!
The traumatic experiences of dirt level, intense combat... that may lead to the development of PCSD is emphasized vividly and precisely through articles, poetry, pictures and graphics for those who truly love and care about us and want to understand what we went through, how it has effected us... and how it will effect them!

PCSD, in most cases, is proportionate to the amount of intense, painfully raw, life-threatening and highly contested combat experienced by the active and energetic participant, who survives it but does not realize, until much later, how devastatingly it, (not completely intentional misbehavior - sometimes due to miss-attempts at self medication) has affected his life; and those close to him! In many cases, he has not yet received any recognition, medals or awards "for just doing his job." But when he finally does... he is awarded several, usually one award degree lesser than those truly earned, as the military routinely downgrades awards to protect and insure the integrity of the higher, more gallant and valorous decorations. The philosophy being... it is better to award lesser decorations and recognition than to award one to an undeserving candidate! Often the GI/veteran demonstrates the degree of severity of PCSD proportionate to how high, and/or many, valor medals (VA termed "stressors") were earned. Sometimes... not yet or ever awarded!

©PCSD - COMBAT PTSD
IS NOT COWARDISM! IT IS A WOUND RESULTING FROM THE EXACT OPPOSITE!

If one does not perform as expected and required in battle, or demonstrates extreme fear by not being able to perform or refusing to perform, by emotion, intent or action, that individual is arrested and brought up on appropriate charges; usually resulting in lengthy prison time, and/or a dishonorable discharge! In cases where such "in-action" causes death or defeat, the violator could be put to death! There are cases where, if the undesired performance does not occur while actually engaged with the enemy, the violator may be granted a less than honorable or medical (for psychological reasons) discharge.

SUCH BEHAVIOR IS NOT PCSD - COMBAT PTSD!

Most severe Combat PTSD symptoms and/or diagnosis thereof, occurs well after battle or separation from the military (usually months or years) and long after an Honorable Discharge has been awarded. I truly hope this clears up any undue criticism, slander or libel in this regard towards our brave warriors. Insult definitely exacerbates (i.e. injury) a Combat PTSD victim's symptoms and may result in physical confrontation! He WILL surely see "red" and his antagonist will definitely see stars and black and blue!
Read and heal my brothers and sisters, heal well... for no one deserves too more than you, you who bled and suffer still... for the sake of others.
You did not fight alone, nor should you make your stand against PCSD alone. Permit me to stand by your side now. Why? Because you are people of honor... people of courage and determination. No matter the odds or the nature of the opposition against you. And, most importantly, my brothers and sisters, because I care about you and because I desire to be with you when we overcome our last, most vicious, unmerciful and deceitful enemy, PCSD. Know as we proceed, that righteousness, understanding and wellbeing is obtainable for us as God shows us the correct path to follow. The libel, slander and theft of our due honor, recognition and good character will end as those who condemn(ed) and shun(ned) those of us suffering from Combat PTSD are enlightened by the truth of our deeds and the sacrifices made on their behalf. With Him lighting and leading the way, our final victory is at hand... the hand of the ultimate leader and healer... The Almighty.

Lessons learned are meant to be shared...
Against the deadly enemy, PCSD, fellow warriors must be prepared!

~ "Confession is good for the soul!" ~

Jesus, I humbly pray mine will help heal all in our noble band of brothers and sisters, Amen.
Warriors, always remember, in your fight against PCSD you do not have to stand alone!
Control the symptoms to stop the abuse and end the guilt!
Then, your WAR AGAINST PCSD will be won!
And... your time to savor love & life begins!
~ Grif ~

IF YOUR GI OR VETERAN SUFFERS FROM COMBAT PTSD
YOUR UNDERSTANDING, CARE AND CONCERN IS
AN ABSOLUTE NECESSITY!

These writings evolved during thirteen years of intense therapy for severe PCSD, a lifetime of hard knocks, bruising and bleeding, plus a sincere and unwavering dedication to serving country, community and my righteous fellows. And an obsessed, burning desire to beat the odds in a game where unscrupulous dealers used a marked, stacked deck and dealt from the bottom, repeatedly, to discriminate, harass, belittle and cheat combat veterans out of jobs, promotions, recognition and hard won, well deserved, solemnly promised benefits! If you can relate to these situations, you definitely have to read, "When You Hear The Bugle Call!" It is about you, too!
After a long, tiresome and arduous contest I cannot tell myself I did not get soiled and bloodied along the way. But one thing for sure... I played fairly, treated others decently and walked away with a small semblance of pride in duty and a satisfactory degree of contentment in my life. Most fulfilling is the knowledge that the opposition doesn’t want me to play another hand or raise it against them, ever again. They will not declare my history a model of success, but... they have not been where I, or those like me, you, have been. They could not fill our boots! We may be torn and tattered but our opposition definitely knows we were there and that we gave them "what for!" Considering they opening admit that at times we had to battle them with one hand tied behind our backs, we all did well. We left our mark in history, bloodied determined enemies, took their coup and we are still holding our guidon securely in the winds of their insecurity, doubt and constant turmoil. We are survivors, warrior/veterans with honor and the ability to continue our journey to its fair and just conclusion. Needless-to-say many are glad to see us move on... and we are still heading in the steadfast, right direction!
As earlier stated, "Confession is good for the soul!" In this case, I pray mine will benefit all who suffer from the righteous cause of protecting their fellow man, those brave souls who suffer gravely for the sake of others, the noble victims of Combat Post Traumatic Stress Disorder!
It is a distinct privilege to share my story with such brave, caring people... my peers, and their true friends and loved ones! Please join me in prayerful hope, hope that we will all benefit from my baring of soul. Thank you for granting me the opportunity to do so. And thank you for this final chance for me to continue helping others by your reading, sharing of, or promoting these books and by the telling of my lifelong odyssey. Please send this url, http://www.grifslair.com to all who might benefit from it's content. May God bless all of you, abundantly, for you certainly deserve it! I wish all of you... COMPLETE AND TOTAL VICTORY IN YOUR PERSONAL WAR AGAINST COMBAT PTSD!

WHEN YOU HEAR THE BUGLE CALL
BOOK REVIEW

Unfortunately, the Vietnam Veteran has never received any measure of respect for his exertions in a bitter war fought under most difficult conditions. The image of a young infantryman walking point down some stinking jungle trail surrounded by danger and risking his life, limbs and manhood with each step taken persists.

Here is the story of a young paratrooper who served with dignity, loyalty, honor and dedication in the battalion which I was fortunate to command in 1965 – 1966. I am proud to have been associated with Pete Griffin and all of his paratroop companions who fought the good fight but who suffered the great pain and anguish of returning home to a totally thankless society. I commend this book to anyone wishing to gain an insight into why so many Vietnam Veterans have experienced difficulty in adjusting after such a soul searing experience. Fortunately, Pete has found his way and is now reaching out to help others do the same.

I am confident that the Vietnam Vets will receive their full payback in Heaven. Bless them all, bless them all – the sergeants and privates and all.

COMBAT PTSD I BEQUEATH!

The sounds of war, come crashing down,
Fast as lightning, death wears a frown....
Soldiers caught, in the Reaper's embrace,
Life's breath leaves, without a trace....

Bomb's explode, cymbols clash,
Machineguns roar, the Reaper laughs....
The Devil's busy, collecting souls,
War is hell, innocence pays the tolls....

The gates of hell are open wide,
The melody plays on, as soldiers die....
Dodging bullets, they stoop and sway,
The Reaper dances, he leads the way....

They dig the earth, in which to hide,
The Reaper's sickle, swings in stride....
Theres no escaping death, you see,
The Reaper's dance, for you and me....

The crescendo heightens, as chaos reigns,
Cadence is kept, to the cries of pain....
The smell of death, vivid realization,
The wages of war, death and tribulation....

To death's music, there is no harmony,
It's notes, concieved of brutal agony....
Grenades explode, life gets, still cheeper,
Death so close, DANCING WITH THE GRIM REAPER....

The hounds of hell, are set free,
Snipers in trees, fill the balcony....
No one escapes his dance, its personal, toe to toe,
Napalm explodes, illuminating, the darkest shadows....

The skies open, as God sheds his tears,
The Reaper keeps dancing, he has no fears....
Death's now playing it's saddest song,
To it's inventory, youth, now belongs....

The sounds of death, keep a steady beat,
Even bravery and valor, suffer defeat....
The rhythmn of hell, plays on forever,
You'll find peace, on "The Twelfth of Never"....

As the dance, slowly, comes to an end,
Life leaves the body, as death settles in....
Rigor-mortis has it's profound, ugly, effect,
In survivors minds, it replays and reflects....

Decapitation, dismemberment, death so grotesque,
Crumpled bodies, loyalty's disfigurement....
Post Combat Stress Disorder, the Devil's sleeper,
You'll get little rest, DANCING WITH THE GRIM REAPER...!
