"THE WOOD WITCH of MINERAL SPRINGS"

©Peter S. Griffin ~ Author/Poet

Back through the ages, a long, long time ago,
Not many people, nor towns, we'll soon come to love and know...
Mother Nature tasked the Wood Witch,
To guard the treasures, she had sown...

She assigned the Wood Witch duties,
Derived from rare and natural beauties...
From valuable minerals and precious stones,
Creating magic dust and potions, the Wood Witch, be known...

In the dense woods, there is a place,
That's never been seen, by any, of the human race...
Well hidden, mystical and magical, it surely is,
This is where the Wood Witch lives...

Mineral Springs is the name of this hidden, forbidden land,
Snaking through it, flows the River Dan...
Its waters nourish the trees and bushes, thick,
Here the Wood Witch cojures up her magic tricks...

Hills and hollows, so very steep and deep,
Surround the cave, where she sleeps...
Her bed is made, on a slab of black onyx,
She lay there looking dead, lying so still upon it!

Camouflaged personally by Mother Nature,
The earth is known to quiver and shake here...
Always shifting, the entrance to the cave,
If you trespass, your future could become quite grave!

The mouth of her cave is hidden by prickly brush,
Thorny spears to slice any violator up...
No animal nor man, dare enter here,
Only bats and she, can navigate, her secret lair...!

This occasional shaking causes the walls to move,
Uncovering silver and gold in every groove...
White, limy water oozes from its walls,
An earthy smell shrouds its mildewed halls...

During the daytime, in this cave, she does hide,
But by night, on slimy, slick paths, she does slide...
In wooden shoes she glides so fast,
Ducking stalactites, a spell she casts...

She loves to eat underground mushrooms and gobs of moss,
Her jagged teeth, well... she really needs to brush and floss!
With her large, snakelike tongue,
Snatching them up, while on the run!

This huge, cavernous, natural tunnel runs for miles,
Water from an unnamed river, spills down, mossy stiles...
Mixing with water from the river "Dan",
Form a large pool, to be dipped, by gnarled hands...

Underground streams permeate this earth,
Mineral rich, they have great worth...
Enormous wealth these waters sift,
Gold and silver particles, cascading down, slowly drift...

Precious, glittering gems, form its roof,
Falling into the pool, those shaken loose...
These waters have great magical powers,
Sapphires, rubies and emeralds, form beautiful, underwater flowers...

This meandering cave gradually leads way up,
To a beautiful mountain's lofty bluffs...
From this secret perch, the Wood Witch can readily see,
All of her secluded, private territory...

The Wood Witch and Mother Nature, are best friends,
Together, their tasks, they do blend...
They each compliment the other's labors,
Doing each other very special favors...

On cloudless nights, when the Moon shines bright,
A magic potion, the Wood Witch brews just right...
A big, black cauldron, filled to the brim,
A roaring fire, boils, the magic liquids within...

She stirs it with her twisted, snake like cane,
She often walks with it, to ease her pains...
Bent and twisted is her back,
From years of hiding in cramped recesses, dank and black...

When her pains become too great,
She casts a spell on her wooden snake...
It sprouts a bushy tail then she takes flight,
Off she soars into the dark of night!

Fireflies drink the green potion as it cools,
Flashing abdomens become their luminous tools...
Lighting their way, as they fly,
Greeting all creatures, as they zip by...

This precious fluid, that she skillfully prepares,
Is called "Basic Instinct", for baby animals, to avoid all snares...
A drink of this, all newborns must taste,
To save them from, uncertain, perilous fates...

A guardian of the young animals, the Wood Witch be,
To humans, no uglier creature, exists than she...
For scary, she must forever be?
To protect the magic gems, of Mineral Springs... eternally?

Tall and skinny, she stands eight feet tall,
A large wart, on her pointed nose, forms a nasty ball...
Her skin, a sickly color of pale green ash,
Gnarly, sharp, yellow fingernails with which to scratch...

One bright red eye, the other dark green,
They crisscross and part in between...
Curly haired eyebrows join above her nose,
On the darkest nights, her one bright red eye eerily glows...

Her teeth are yellow and very sharp,
She'll not hesitate, to tear violator's clothes apart!
On top her head sets a large brimmed, pointed black hat,
Around its' base a bright orange ribbon holds a silver buckle fast...

She has an ugly, wrinkled brow,
To go with her glaring, terrifying scowl...
Her breath smells just awful, oh so foul,
Her large nostrils expose gray hairs snarled!

She's clothed in one big, black, smelly dress,
It blends right in with hair, disheveled and messed...
Round her waist a magic pouch is tied,
Here she keeps dust and recipes, tested and tried...

Another job she must faithfully do,
Providing colors for all the plants, the animals too...
Mixing colored dust, scratched from various gems,
With magic waters she does blend...

She pours the concoction in her pot,
She stirs and stirs and stirs a lot,
Untill the mixture becomes very, very hot,
Soon only magic dust remains, of moisture, there be not...

Realizing all this work is just too much, she decides to cojure help,
She casts a spell, waves her cane, lets out a yelp...
She gathers two elves, two fairies and two fireflies,
A puff of smoke, two creatures appear, before her eyes!

They look like elves, have wings like fairies,
Glow like fireflies, and like her, sharp fingernails scary...!
"What will I name them... let me see,
PINCHETS!, that is what they'll be!"

Now, many fingernails scrape magic dust from beautiful gems,
So much easier when you have true friends...
"Maddy" be him, "Mayo" be she,
Perhaps some day, baby, makes three!

They help the Wood Witch mix her brews,
Watching her, they take their cues...
Pinch by pinch, they precisely measure,
Never wasting a particle of Mother Nature's treasure...

Together they work hard and get things done,
Constantly busy, the Pinchets always on the run...
Flying here, flying there, chasing off a gigantic grizzly bear,
The strange, loud hum of their wings, instill chaos and fear...

Sometimes in the forest unwanted people snoop around,
Always stealing dropped gems they found...
The Pinchets must be more careful when they fly,
Must not drop precious stones from the sky!

The more gems found, the more people look,
Some even drew maps in a book!
The entrance to the cave must never be found,
To scare them off, Mother Nature violently shakes the ground!

Practice, practice, finally, the Pinchets get it right,
They even learn to fly at night...!
Lighting up like fireflies with bellies bright,
Even long-lost precious stones come into sight…

With the many, magically colored dusts,
The Wood Witch flies high, swerving much...
Mother Nature blows winds with mighty gusts,
Plants and animals get sprinkled, with colors robust...

Then thunder clouds and lightning bring on the rain,
Flora and fauna, are no longer plain...!
Mother Nature then causes the sun to shine,
A great colored rainbow, in the sky does climb!

The many brilliant colors of Mineral Springs,
Prompts the animals and birds to sing...
Many beautifully colored birds take to wing,
Protective colorings, the animals gladly accept in the offering...

Mother Nature is pleased, this work she'll keep,
Of plants and animals, a favorite of each, she did seek...
Of flora and fauna, she picks the beautiful Dogwood Tree,
A glorious bright red Cardinal in its branches be...
