My Pope genealogy begins with
James Pope, born in England, whose family stood connected with
the English poet, Alexander Pope. James Pope was the father of
three sons, Charles, George Whitefield, and Richard, all of whom
were born in England. James and his wife, Mary, came to America
and settled in Philadelphia. After James died, Mary and the
children moved to North Carolina.
2nd generation: George Whitefield Pope married Mary Hiatt
3rd generation: Isaac Pope married Mary Stuart
4th generation: William "Brantley" Pope married Alice Erwin
5th generation: Robert Lindsay Pope married Elizabeth Catherine "Betty" Fritts
