A Message from the President…
It seems like only yester= day that we were waiting for SOS to arrive, and now it’s gone. I guess we’ll just have to w= ait until the Fall Migration. SOS= just seems to give us another reason to get together, have some adult beverages, dance, and do a little partying. I had to bail out early during SOS. Wanda and I were expecting a new grandbaby. She stayed home. I went to the beach to take care o= f some condo issues. Then I went home. I missed the Pour Party= , the parade, and all the other festivities. You can bet I’ll be ready for= the next SOS!! From what I understand, the Pour Pa= rty was great with over 100 people. Thanks to all the members who participated.
Now, let’s talk abo= ut another party that will help hold us over until September. That would be our 25th anniversary party. It will be= June 14, at Lance and Renee’s, from 5 until 10. Our own Kyle Beam will be the DJ. <= span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'> In order to make sure we have the c= orrect amount of food, you need to make sure that you RSVP to Jim and Brenda Kisne= r by June 8. We had a sign-up shee= t at the last meeting, and we’ll have one at the next meeting. If you don’t sign up at either meeting, you’ll need to contact Jim and Brenda at 704-483-1119, or Kisners2@aol.com. The party will be free for members = and $5 for guests. The food will be = a Low Country Shrimp Boil, and beer will be provided. With free food and beer you can see= the importance of the RSVP. We don’t want to run out of beer, or, for that matter, food either. Look for more details elsewhere in= this newsletter.
Speaking of newsletters, = I hope you liked your last one. That= was the best newsletter we’ve had in years. Why was that? It was because we had more input fr= om our members. Thanks to all of you= for your input. I’m sure Mi= ke Felts also appreciates it too. It certainly makes his job easier.
Summer is just around the= corner. It gets more difficult during the summer to get members to Shag Nights, and meetings. There are vacations, golf, the lake, and many other things that make it difficult to make the commitment to attend. It̵= 7;s only 1 Saturday a month. Try = to make it. Your club needs your support. So far, things have = been going well on Shag Nights. Th= e only exception was the Final 4 weekend. By the time the game got started good, everyone was either headed ho= me, or in the lounge watching. We= did have good attendance for the meeting, even with the games on. Thanks to all of you. It says a lot about our members. Keep it up!! Hope to see you at the meetin= g on June 7.
Just one more note. There= will be no meeting in July!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Your President,

A Different Memorial Day Outing
Mike Felts<=
span
style=3D'font-size:18.0pt'>
Since Marcia and I live o=
n Lake
Norman, usually we are out there on Memorial Day with the other 5 million
boaters. But, this year we de=
cided to
do something a little different. We
rented a nice log cabin at Stone Mountain State Park (NC) for a few days. The park is in Wilkes and Alleghan=
y counties,
about 1 and ½ hours from our house.=
It was very secluded and beautiful.=
We sat on the back porch a lot, watching the deer, wild turkeys, and
other wildlife, while enjoying the views.&=
nbsp;
And hiking, especially on the stone mountain itself, was very enjoya=
ble. Marcia is quite interested in gene=
alogy. Since most of my relatives lived i=
n that
area back in the 1800’s and early 1900’s, we went to several
graveyards, taking pictures of tombstones.=
The weather was fantastic. =
span>I
wouldn’t want to do this every vacation or holiday weekend. But, it sure was relaxing and
invigorating. The change of p=
ace
(no phone, no internet, limited TV) was great.
HALLELUJAH!!
By Renee Muse
I can’t believe it&=
#8217;s
finally time for our “baby girl” to graduate from high school.<=
span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'> Hallelujah!! Most of you know that Lance and I =
have
been waiting for this special day for quite some time. This means that now we can go to t=
he
BEACH! (Oh my gosh, did I jus=
t say
I can actually go to the beach?) It
also means that we can go to out of town shag parties, too. Hell, it means we can go ANYWHERE!=
! Glenda Brown, do you remember tell=
ing me
that you were going to have to “rest up” for two weeks before my
first SOS? Well rest up girl
because here we come. Graduat=

Day is June 7th so we will not be at the June meeting. I, for one, will be drinking--heav=

It
sounds like Lance, and especially Renee, will be hard to keep up with this =
Fall
Migration SOS. And, congratulations on your daughter’s graduation.
SOS Fall Migration and Fun Monday<= o:p>
I know it’s only Ju= ne, but it’s not too early to start talking about Fall SOS. The dates for this great party are September 12 to September 21, 2008. A big part of Fall SOS are the Fun Sunday and Fun Monday parties-live bands performing outdoors for all to enjoy at no charge. But, someone has to pay for this, = the free food, and the other things that SOS offers us, at no charge. So, we sell raffle tickets for $10= each, with the chance of winning some serious cash. Wanda Cavin will be heading this u= p for LNSC again this year (thanks Wanda). She has the tickets now and she will be selling them beginning at th= is meeting, June 7. Below is a n= ote sent to me by Wanda, concerning the raffle:
It’s time for Fun Monday tickets to go on =
sale
again. Lake Norman has sold t=
heir
allotment of 100 tickets for years and we certainly would like to continue
this.
This will be the 13th annual Fun Mond=
ay on
September 15. The first ticket
drawn receives $7,500, second $2,500, third $1,000, fourth ticket $500, and fifth ticket $250.=
Remember you can’t win if you
don’t have a ticket in the pot!&nb=
sp;
The club selling the winning ticket will receive $100.
The money from ticket sales is used to pay for t=
he
entertainers that shaggers have come to expect. The ticket sales also finance Fun S=
unday.
Fun Monday has been so succes=
sful
that, several years back, the S.O.S. Enhancement Committee decided to create
Fun Sunday. Now we have both =
these
events to look forward to, as well as everything else during S.O.S.
If all our members purchase just 1 ticket we can
continue to sell our allotment. We
will have the tickets for sale at the meeting on June 7. Don’t miss y=
our
chance to purchase yours.
Happy
Birthday To You

Greek Island Cruise
Bill Cavin<= /p>
On May 9, a group of 18 s=
haggers
from the Lake Norman Shag club boarded planes for a Greek Island Cruise.
.
We visited the exotic por= ts of Rome, Naples, Athens, Izmir, Marmaris, Istanbul in Turkey, Kataklon in Gree= ce, and Livorno in Italy. We were= able to see ruins of places that were built before Christ was born. Just imagine, if you can, a visit = to the House of The Virgin Mary, Pompeii, The Vatican, The Coliseum, and on and on. There was so much to see,= and only a small amount of time. = We were on the go from morning ‘til night for 13 days. As you might imagine, with so many people, parts of the crowd went off in different directions daily. At the end of a touring day, we had= a meeting place on the back of the ship, where we could meet, discuss the day, plan the next day and, oh yes, enjoy some adult beverages. This seemed to work out very well. = You always had an idea where to fin= d our crowd. Even on the Sea Days, = we used the same gathering point. The big difference was the time. = It could be 10 AM or Noon or later. You could find some of you friends.= The fact that the bar and food wer= e at the same place that we gathered didn’t hurt matters.
Before you knew it, we we= re all sitting around the lounge waiting for our numbers to be called so we could = exit the ship. I guess that I coul= d go on and on about the trip, but there is just so little time, and my brain doesn’t work for long periods of time. The good news is that we were all g= lad to get back to Lake Norman. The = trip was a lot of fun, but there is no place like home.
Next Newsletter Deadline
The deadline for the next newsletter (the August/September edition) will be July 21, 2008. I prefer for you to send articles = in Word format to jmfelts@msn.com. Or, if you had rather mail them, s= end them to Mike Felts, 3978 Rhynland Drive, Sherrills Ford, NC, 28673. Or, call me at 828-478-3484. As you can tell, I’ll take anything in about any form. J= ust, please help me find relative, informative articles and topics for the newsletter. Mark July 21 on y= our calendar and have something to me by that date for the next newsletter. I will appreciate it, and so will = your club members. If you start wr= iting your article now, you’ll have about 1 ½ months to get it to me= .
Why We’re Shaggers
Mike Felts<= /p>
Marcia and I took our fir= st shag lessons many years ago, because we wanted to learn a structured dance, as compared to the crazy stuff that we had been doing ever since college days. Also, we had seen the s= hag and liked the dance. So, we l= earned a little about it, at least enough so that we could dance and not be laughe= d at by many people. We have never= been competition dancers (we like to watch them), but we did go on to be shag da= nce instructors for 8 or more years. (Literally, we have forgotten 4 times or more steps than we know). <= /p>
Somewhere along the line,= it happened. People had always t= old us that being a shagger was more than just the dance. They said it was more of a lifesty= le. Because of SOS, shag clubs, parties, the people we have met, the music, and many ot= her things, I now understand what they are talking about. Marcia and I no longer teach struc= tured classes. We might do it again= . We have no plans of it at the pres= ent time. Even though we are not conducting classes, we are glad to help anyone, if we can. For the past 6 or 7 years, I have = been a part-time DJ (Pharmacist is my profession), specializing in shag music (although I play many other types of music, when appropriate). Now, being around the caliber of pe= ople that are shaggers, like the LNSC members, is the most important thing. Yes, we still dance some. The music is great. The shag clubs, along with most of= the lounges are fantastic. SOS is= a blast. So is the Chicken Pickin’. But the people= , the fun, and the camaraderie-that’s what keeps us in the shag world. The dance itself is still fun. We still love to do it. But, there’s so much more to= being a shagger than just the dance itself. I hope all of you understand what I’m trying to say. I think most of you will agree with me. If you’re new to the dance, stick with it. The dan= ce will come and so will the lifestyle. Shagging is definitely not a religion, political party (can’t believe I brought up politics in an election year), or anything like that.<= span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'> Is it a lifestyle? You decide.

We would like to recogniz= e the people that contributed to this edition of “The Big Time Scoop”: Bill Cavin, Wan= da Cavin, and Renee Muse. I hope= that I have a longer list of names to include in the next newsletter. Please have your articles to me by= July 21 for the next edition.
