Lenten Devotional Guide - March 7

Today's Scripture Reading:
Luke 4:31-44

Thoughts for the Day:
In yesterday's reading, Jesus had been rejected in his hometown of Nazareth. Today, Jesus travels to Capernaum and the people were amazed at the authority of his teaching. Why the different results between the two towns?

What does this teach you about dealing with your own failures when you try to serve God?

What do you make of Jesus' power to heal and cast out evil spirits? Have you ever experienced this power?

In verse 35 and verse 41, Jesus rebukes the demons for saying that he is the Son of God. Why do you think he didn't want anyone to know he was the Christ?

Fasting Update:
I think the real reason I chose "not eating out" as my Lenten fast is because of my struggle with comfort and convenience. I like to eat out because it's fast and easy...and there's no clean up!

But there are people around the world who walk long distances just to get water or who have to work the ground just to put food on the table. And I'm complaining because, for just 40 days, I have to drive home at lunch and make a sandwich from a stocked refridgerator!

There is a blues singer named Keb Mo who sings a song called "The Victims of Comfort". Sometimes "Comfort" is like a big demon that overpowers his victims.

"And everyone likes a party
but no one wants to clean
and I'd like to see a change somehow
but I'm a little busy right now
just a little busy right now..."

Perhaps Jesus calls us to things other than those things that are the easiest... fastest...most convenient...most comfortable...
