Lenten Devotional Guide - March 12

Today's Scripture Reading: Luke 7:1-35

Thoughts for the Day:
Sometimes I think the people in the Bible had an unfair advantage in the faith department because they actually got to see Jesus in person!

But in today's passage we see a model of faith in a person who had never even MET Jesus. The Centurion (verse 3) had only heard of Jesus...but he truly believed Jesus could heal his servant.

Notice that while the elders thought this man "deserved" the help of Jesus, the Centurion himself...a powerful Roman soldier...considered himself "not worthy".

Why is it that not feeling "worthy" is an important ingredient of faith?

In your life, do you depend more on your own abilities or on your trust in Christ's power?

Fasting Update:
Be sure to ask Elizabeth about the "breakfast pizzas" we had for supper last night. Most disturbing...

The thing about not eating out is that you have to be more "intentional" about each day. You have to plan ahead by going to the grocery store with the whole week in mind. You have to plan ahead each day by thawing out the chicken or cutting up the vegetables. I'm so used to just going out and grabbing a bite to eat, that this is difficult for me.

But should I not learn to be more "intentional" about each day in other aspects of my life? Like planning ahead a time to be alone with God...to read the scriptures and pray? Like planning ahead a time to call a friend who is hurting? Or to reach out to a new friend? I know enough about myself to say that these things don't happen if I'm not intentional about them. You know what they say, "if you aim at nothing...you'll probably hit it."

Have a great week, everybody! Hang in there with your fast. I'm praying for you!
