The Season of Lent, or the 40 days before Easter, begins this week on Ash Wednesday. In the next couple days, give some thought to how you will observe Lent this year. Here are some suggestions:
Meditation: This year, we will be reading through the Gospel of Luke during Lent. Each day there will be an assigned scripture passage and a devotional thought on this site. Read the scripture and spend a few minutes reflecting on how God might be speaking to you.
Prayer: Lent is certainly a special time for prayer. There is a particular emphasis on repentance during Lent. Take time to examine your relationship with God. Spiritual renewal is possible only if you are willing to confess your sins and allow God to change your life.
Fasting: A powerful way to observe the season of Lent is to fast. Fasting can be a way to cleanse the body and mind. It imposes self-discipline and encourages meditation and reflection. Here are some suggestions for a Lenten fast: give up one big meal a week and donate the money to charity, give up chocolate, give up french fries, give up a bad habit, watch less T.V., commit to a daily quiet time, commit to a weekly service project, etc. Whatever you decide to do for Lent, remember that this is an exercise to help you focus on the love of Christ, who gave his life for you!
