Lenten Devotional Guide - April 4

Today's Scripture Reading:
Luke 17:20-37

Thoughts for the Day:
A few days ago I saw a sight to behold. Maybe you saw it to. A tall, slender African American man dressed completely in white Biblical garb with a giant sign that said "REPENT" was standing at the intersection across from Bojangles. Naturally, I assumed he was trying to get Kyle McGough's attention. HAHAHA. Just kidding. I think he was trying to get everyone's attention...to remind us that the Kingdom of God is near.

When you read today's text, you may have more questions about the Kingdom of God than you have answers. When? Where? How? Jesus' remarks only add to the mystery. Sometimes it seems like he's talking about something that will happen in the future. Sometimes it seems like he's talking about something that has already come. But without a doubt, the message is "get ready". Spend less time on "preserving" this life and more time on "the kingdom of God among (or within) you."

How do you think our lives would if we lived like "a people in waiting"?

Fasting Update:
O brother (or sister), where art thou?!?!?

I really needed you guys the last couple days. I went to visit with my friend Jeremy in Houston. There were incredible restaurants of every variety as far as the eye could see. I was soooooo tempted to break my fast. I mean, after all, the best thing about going on a trip is eating somewhere exciting!

Fortunately, my man Jeremy helped me out. We went to the grocery store and picked up some things for me to eat. I told him we could go eat somewhere if he wanted and I could just take a sack lunch. But he said, "aw, man, I'm not going do that to you!" Incidentally, Jeremy gave up television for Lent...so we did NOT watch the NCAA championship game! (Actually, we went to the U2 concert...but that's another story!)

The trip home was the worst. My flight was delayed for two hours. I was tired and hungry and even the Popeye's fried chicken stand was starting to look good. I almost cracked. But something within me said, "Pull yourself together, man! Christ died for you! Be faithful to your promise!".

Whether you've been able to stick to your fast or not, take time to reflect on the meaning of the cross this week. Look back at the reading from yesterday and recall the one leper who returned to give thanks to Jesus. Offer thanks to the one who gave his life for you and then "rise and go, your faith has made you well." (Luke 17:19)
