Notes for BERTIE ELLA GALLOWAY:
My grandmother, Bertie Ella
Galloway, was born February 01, 1903, in Transylvania County, N. C. She lived
in the area of the Davidson River in what is now Pisgah National Forest. (I
have yet to discover exactly where the site of the Galloway home was.) Grandma
was the seventh child of 11 born to Rufus McKellan Galloway and Susan Clerendy
Butler Galloway.
About 1920, the family moved
to Gastonia, N. C., for jobs in the cotton mills. Shortly thereafter, Grandma
met my grandfather, T. A. "Bill" Shepherd (1904-1983). According to
Louise Rigdon Myers, Bertie became pregnant and left Gastonia for Olive
Galloway's in Rosman, Transylvania County. Senia and Roxie Galloway wrote the
letter telling Bertie's father about the pregnancy. My Grandpa got a good
talking to by his mill's walking boss (Mr. Queen). Grandpa went to get Grandma
and on the way back to Gastonia, they married on February 24, 1923, in York
County, S. C.
Seven more children were to
follow (in all, six of the eight survived infancy), born in various places.
Grandma worked on and off in the mills until she retired.
My father worked in Gastonia
during his later years, and many days, at lunchtime, he would drive from his
work to Grandma's house for a couple of tomato sandwiches that Grandma always
had ready for him.
After the death of Grandpa,
Grandma lived with my Aunt Marie in Gastonia and Uncle Buddy in Forest City
until her death on December 05, 1986. She was buried beside her husband of 60
years in Hollywood Cemetery in Gastonia, N. C.
Grandma's life had been very
hard on her. I rarely saw her smile. She was a small woman, bent over from a
life time of hard work in the home and the mill. Her small home was a two
bedroom affair with a den and a kitchen. I did not see her often due to a rift
between my father and Grandpa, but the times I did spend with her were special
to me. It was through her occasional stories that I began a journey of falling
in love with the county of her birth.
