A black panel, full of stars, a glowing swirl of primordial gasses beginning to revolve. Like the noise of a multitude in the mountains, a tumultuous noise like of a great many people, of kingdoms, of nations gathered together; it is the Lord of Hosts, commanding a Host to battle. -Old Testament, Book of Isaiah

Page 2, Panel 1

A hallway, two men walk down it dressed in white ankle length robes, wings at rest behind them. The two men are Lucifer, one of Heaven’s lieutenants and Michael, Captain of Heaven’s armies.

MICHAEL: THERE’S NO WAY YOU CAN SUCCEED. FATHER KNOWS WHAT YOU’RE UP TO.

LUCIFER: I MUST SUCCEED MICHAEL, I MUST! THINGS CAN’T GO ON THE WAY THEY HAVE FOR MILLENNIA.

Page 2, Panel 2

Same hallway, same men. Now they face each other.

LUCIFER: MY PLAN INSURES SUCCESS! MY PLAN MEANS A NEW WAY OF DOING THINGS. CAN’T YOU SEE THAT?

Page 2, Panel 3

Same hallway, but now Michael walks away in disgust.

MICHAEL: I WON’T FOLLOW YOU LUCIFER, NOR WILL MY ARMY. YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN.

Page 2, Panel 4

We see Michael, away from the confrontation with Lucifer and sitting down. Tears fall down his face.

MICHAEL: O, HOW FALLEN FROM HEAVEN ARE YOU, LUCIFER. A MORNING STAR, SON OF DAWN! YOU DID SAY IN YOUR HEART “I WILL ASCEND INTO HEAVEN AND ABOVE THE PLANETS OF THE GOD WILL I RAISE MY THRONE.”


Page 3, Panel 1

Heaven. That Paradise sought by so many is now engulfed in war. At the Vanguard is Michael, dressed in his armor, with all his brightness and glory. Behind him is the Host of Heaven. Before him, kneeling on the ground, is Lucifer, in chains.

MICHAEL: LUCIFER, YOU HAVE LOST. YOUR ARMY IS DEFEATED, AND YOU ARE IN CHAINS. DO YOU YIELD!?!

Page 3, Panel 2

A close up of Lucifer. Gone is the fairness that described him earlier. Now he is full of hate and envy. He spits on the ground.

LUCIFER: TAKE ME BEFORE YOUR GOD AND HAVE THIS MOCKERY DONE WITH!

Page 3, Panel 3

We are now in a throne room. A powerful, commanding figure lies seated in the throne. His brightness and glory is beyond description. Here truly is the Lord of Creation. Before him in chains, is Lucifer, head bowed.

GOD: MY SON, HOW FAR YOU HAVE FALLEN…. TO THINK THAT AT ONE TIME YOU WERE ONE OF OUR GREATEST HOPES. NOW YOU ARE ONE OF OUR GREATEST TRAGEDIES.


Page 4, Panel 1

Same scene, but smaller. Now Lucifer raises his head.

LUCIFER: I ONLY DO THAT WHICH I FEEL IS RIGHT. YOU VALUE AGENCY, AND YET I AM PUT IN CHAINS FOR DISAGREEING WITH YOU!

Page 4, Panel 2

Close up of the man in the throne.

GOD: YES I VALUE CHOICE, I HAVE ALSO TAUGHT YOU THAT ALL CHOICES ARE ACCOMPANIED BY CONSEQUENCES. YOU ARE FALLEN LUCIFER AND MAY NOT ABIDE IN MY PRESENCE ANY LONGER.

Page 4, Panel 3

A view of the entire throne room. For the first time we see others in chains behind Lucifer, also kneeling on the floor. The man in the throne has his arms outstretched, giving command.

GOD: FROM THIS DAY FORWARD AND INTO ETERNITY, LUCIFER AND HIS MINIONS ARE BANISHED FROM HEAVEN. ALL CONTACT WITH THEM IS FORBIDDEN AND THEY SHALL NEVER SET FOOT INTO THE BLESSED REALM AGAIN.

Same room, close up of God.

GOD: I ALSO STRIP FROM LUCIFER ALL RIGHT, DOMIONS, AND POWERS. FROM THIS DAY HENCE HE SHALL BE KNOWN AS SATAN, FOR HE IS NO LONGER SON OF THE MORNING. TO THE VOID YOU SHALL GO, SATAN, OUTER DARKNESS WILL BE THY HOME. TO THE DEPTHS OF THE PIT DO I CONDEMN THEE.

Close up of Satan. We see the arrogance that has brought him to this point.

SATAN (THOUGHT BUBBLE): I SHALL YET HAVE YOUR THRONE OLD MAN!


Page 5, Panel 1

We see Satan, in chains, being led by Michael and a few of his host. Behind them is heaven, below them can be seen the earth.

Page 5, Panels 2 through 5

Satan has been thrown from heaven to earth below. As he falls he changes from the angel he was to the demon he will become. As he falls the earth begins to be obscured by a rift in the dimensions and he falls into it. He screams while falling.

SATAN: YOU COULD HAVE HAD IT ALL MICHAEL! I WILL REMEMBER!


Page 6, Panel 1

We see Matthew Barker, Prof. of Archaeology at UCLA, awakening from a dream. Sweat covers his brow and he is covered in blankets. He holds his head in his hands.

BARKER (THOUGHT BUBBLE): ONE MORE NIGHT OF THOSE AND I’M GIVING VALIUM A TRY.

Page 6, Panel 2

Barker has moved to his fridge. It’s open and he munching on something while looking for something to drink.

Barker lies down again in bed. Page 6, Panel 4

We see Barker fall asleep and as he does so, the visions begin again.

We see the barren Egyptian desert, the half built pyramid of Giza in the background.

An overseer walks into the picture, whip in hand.

We see the overseer (his eyes glow with a sinister light) whipping a slave who is on the ground, her basket of bricks strewn before her.

OVERSEER: ON YOUR FEET HEBREW DOG!

We see Jerusalem and the Dome of the Rock. In the distance lies the Temple of the Most High God.

We’re inside the Palace of the Governor, Potius Pilate. We see Pilate seated in a throne, the silhouette of a man in chains, head bowed a crown of thorns on his head.

MAN IN SILHOUETTE: UNTO THIS END WAS I BORN.

Page 8, Panel 3

Pilate’s balcony overlooking the masses below him. Roman Centurions (one of which has a sinister glow in his eyes) flank him and below the courtyard is full. A basin of water and a towel are at his side.

CROWD: CRUCIFY HIM! CRUCIFY HIM!

PILATE: I WASH MY HANDS OF THIS. THE SIN BE UPON YOUR HEADS.

We see the city of Tenochitlan in all her glory.

Page 9, Panel 2

Looking closer at Tenochitlan we see that she is besieged by Spanish and Indian troops. Smoke from various cannons can be seen, as well as a large crowd surrounding the largest, center most temple.

CAPTION: IN AN ATTEMPT TO GARNER THEIR GOD’S FAVOR, THOUSANDS OF SOULS WERE SACRIFICED. THEIR STILL BEATING HEARTS GIVEN IN ADORATION.

PRIEST: MIGHTY HUITZILOPOCHTLI PLEASE ACCEPT THIS SACRIFICE AND GIVE US POWER OVER OUR ENEMIES!

Tenochitlan lies in ruins, its people massacred, its King in chains. We’re in the palace of King Moctezuma, and Cortez is seated on his throne, surrounded by his guards. (one of which has the glow) Moctezuma himself lies in chains.

We see Nazi HQ, Berlin 1942.

Page 10, Panel 2

Picture of Auchwitz, hundred of people milling around.

CAPTION: ONCE AGAIN, DEATH SPREADS HIS WINGS.

Page 10, Panel 3

We see Hitler, seated on a chair, the Nazi Blood Flag behind him, SS soldiers guard him. (One of them has the sinister eye glow) Kneeling before him is a man dressed in occult robes, a staff lying before him.

HITLER: YOU WILL OBTAIN THE SPEAR FOR ME, OR I WILL HAVE YOU HEAD. DO YOU UNDERSTAND?

MAN: YES, MIEN FURER.

Page 10, Panel 4

We see that same man, deep within a tomb. He carries a torch and has with him numerous soldiers of the SS. Before him is a sarcophagus, the lid removed and the body of a King of yesteryear. In his hand is a spear, along side him is a massive axe.

MAN: WE HAVE FOUND IT! THE SPEAR OF LONGINIUS. THE VERY SPEAR THAT PIERCED THE SIDE OF THE CHRIST.

Page 10, Panel 5

We see the same scene from the opposite direction. We see the silhouette of a man and what could be wings coming from his sides. The face of the leader turns towards us and we see fear in his eyes.

MAN: WHO, WHAT ARE YOU?

Page 10, Panel 6

We’re back in Hitler’s throne room. A dead messenger lies at his feet. He holds a piece of paper in his hands.

HITLER: I WILL HAVE THAT SPEAR.


Page 11, Panel 1

We are at the outskirts of the city of Rome. We see the 7 hills surrounding this once mighty city.

CAPTION: ROME. C. 1999. THE FABLED CITY OF THE SEVEN HILLS.

Page 11, Panel 2

We see a picture of the Coliseum, the city in the background.

CAPTION: ONCE THIS CITY RULED THE WORLD. IT TIED THE PEOPLE TOGETHER BY BONDS OF STATEHOOD AND BELIEF. ROME WAS THE WORLD, AND THE WORLD WAS ROME.

Page 11, Panel 3

We see rising out of the center of Rome a building of black glass. The words, “Wormwood Inc.” can be seen at the top.

CAPTION: THE WAR THAT HAS LASTED FROM THE BEGINNING OF TIME NEARS ITS CONCLUSION.


Page 12, Panel 1

We are now at the penthouse level of the Wormwood building. Inside is a large table of solid wood. Surrounding the table are 6 men in plush chairs. Each man appears to be of a different race and nationality, but they are all dressed in solid black suits. They appear to be agitated and waiting for something.

MAN #1 (BLACK): HE SAID HE’D BE HERE 45 MINUTES AGO. DOESN’T THAT IDIOT KNOW I HAVE A BUSINESS TO RUN!

MAN #2 (WHITE): SHUT UP YOU FOOL! HE’S PROBABLY GOT THIS ROOM WIRED AND KNOWS EXACTLY WHAT WE’RE SAYING.

MAN #1: HE CAN GO TO HELL FOR ALL I CARE!

Page 12, Panel 2

We see the men turning around as someone enters the room. The figure in question is shadowed and we can not see his face.

MAN IN SHADOWS: BELIEVE ME WHEN I TELL YOU MR. WASHINGTON, THAT HAVING BEEN THERE ONCE, I FIND THE PLACE A LITTLE TOO… DULL FOR ME.

Page 12, Panel 3 We see the man for the first time. He is tall, gaunt, and bald. His eyes glow with a sinister light and there’s a slight smirk on his face.

Page 12, Panel 4

Abaddon stands at the head of the table. His hands on the table, as he addresses the others. The other men all look to him, a mixture of hatred, envy, and fear on their faces.

ABADDON: THE TIME HAS COME. AFTER YEARS OF PLANNING, OUR GOALS WILL SOON BE MADE MANIFEST. OUR MASTER WILL BE FREE AND WE WILL RULE IN HIS NAME.

Same scene, just a slightly different angle.

Abaddon: In 2 months all will be made ready and one of the final gates will open.

Abaddon has walked over to Washington and holds his chin in his left hand.

ABADDON: DID I NOT RAISE YOU UP? DID I NOT TAKE YOU FROM THE GUTTERS OF THIS WORLD AND LEAD YOU TO THE TOP? DID I NOT MAKE YOU WHO YOU ARE?

WASHINGTON: YES MY LORD. ALL THAT I AM I OWE TO YOU.

WASHINGTON (OFF SCREEN): WHAT EVER YOU HAVE HEARD ARE LIES, SPREAD BY THOSE WHO WOULD RUIN ME, TAKE YOUR FAVOR FROM ME. YOU ARE MY LIFE, MY LOVE, THE REASON FOR MY EXISTENCE.

We see Abaddon and Washington again. Washington’s chin still in Abaddon’s hand.

ABADDON: QUAINT, CHARMING WORDS. BUT FROM YOU I EXPECTED NOTHING LESS. UNFORTUNATELY, THEY ARE LIES.

Page 13, Panel 6

Washington’s eyes are wide open, along with his mouth.

Abaddon twists his arm and takes Washington’s head off.

We see Matthew sitting at a desk piled high with Anthro journals, papers, etc. Seated across him is a very attractive young lady. He’s in his jacket again.

MATTHEW: SO TELL ME AGAIN WHY I SHOULD LET YOU INTO MY CLASS, KIM.

Page 15, Panel 3 Same room, no girl. He’s leaning back in his chair, a cup of coffee with the words ‘Archaeology Magazine’ in his hand. His eyes are closed.

MATTHEW (THOUGHT BUBBLE): ONLY 10 MORE WEEKS TO GO UNTIL MEXICO. WHY DID I EVER AGREE TO TAKE JOAN’S COURSE LOAD?

Same room, he’s now sitting up straight, a smile on his face.

MATTHEW (THOUGHT BUBBLE): CAUSE YOU’RE A SUCKER FOR A PRETTY SMILE AND A NICE DINNER, THAT’S WHY.

Page 16, Panel 1

We see an alley in what could be any major American city. Garbage along the walls, water running down the middle, a drunk homeless person on the right side. Running down the middle is a young black man, gun in hand, starting to look backwards, an expression of fear in his eyes.

PUNK: OH MY GOD, OH MY GOD, OH MY GOD.

Page 16, Panel 2

We see a silhouette of a rather tall, slightly built man. The punk stops suddenly, with the gun pointed forward.

PUNK: HO… HOW?!?

Page 16, Panel 3

We see the face of the strange man for the first time. He’s very handsome, with blonde hair and green eyes. (Although they have a reddish tint to them). He’s dressed in stylish, upper class clothes. He’s smiling.

Page 16, Panel 4

The man is biting the punk’s neck. Blood spurts out and you can see that the man has the fangs of a vampire. Various sound effects for fun.

Page 16, Panel 5

We see the same stylish young man, now in a tuxedo, champagne glass in hand, speaking with a very beautiful woman in a very short, tight, slinky dress.

WOMAN: SO CAM, HOW MUCH ARE YOU WORTH THESE DAYS?

CAMERON: HOW THE HELL SHOULD I KNOW, POP’S DEALS WITH ALL THAT S$&T.

MAN: AND NOW, WITH NO FURTHER ADO, I PRESENT TO YOU CAMERON STORM, HEIR TO THE STORM FORTUNE.

We see Cameron coming to the podium, applause greeting him.


Page 17, Panel 1

Now we’re at a college library. Seated at a desk amid a pile of books is Emily Wilson. She’s extremely attractive, with long black hair and blue eyes. The books include, ‘MacBeth, Romeo & Juliet, A History of the Theatre, Acting 101.’

Page 17, Panel 2

Close up of Emily, she’s reading a play and is deep in thought.

EMILY: FIVE MORE PAGES TO GO AND I’LL BE SET FOR THE TEST TOMORROW. WHO EVER THOUGHT ACTING WOULD BE SO HARD?

Page 17, Panel 3 We see Emily dressed in an NYU cheerleader’s outfit on the sidelines of a basketball game.

Page 17, Panel 4

Emily is in a movie theatre, sitting next to your typical football jock. He appears bored, she appears interested in whatever the movie is.

Page 17, Panel 5

Emily and the Jock are leaving the theatre. The marquee reads ‘Pride and Prejudice’

JOCK: I’LL NEVER UNDERSTAND YOU CHICKS. NEXT WEEK WE’RE GOING TO THE NEW JACKIE CHAN MOVIE.

EMILY: YOU’RE NOT EXACTLY OVERFLOWING WITH CULTURE, ARE YOU JACK?

Page 18, Panel 1

We see a newspaper, entitled ‘Millennial Star’. The lead story is ‘Roswell – Cover-up or National Joke?’ The byline reads ‘Arturo Campana’.

Page 18, Panel 2

We see a rather large man at a construction site. Typical construction clothes, he’s talking with a man in a suit over the hood of a truck. On the side of the truck are the words, ‘Campana Construction. Corpus Christi, TX. (555) 555-1243

Page 18, Panel 3

We see the man at dinner with his family. He has a beautiful wife, 2 sons and a charming daughter. The boys are fighting and the man is trying to calm them.

ARTURO: HIJOS! QUIT FIGHTING OR IT’S STRAIGHT TO BED AFTER DINNER.

WIFE: MIVIDA, WILL YOU BE UP LATE TONIGHT?

It’s a darkened room full of computer equipment. The only lights come from the monitors.

Flip side of the previous scene. We see a slightly overweight young man seated at a computer.

DAVID: 10 MORE MINUTES AND I’LL BE IN.

DAVID: THIS’LL TEACH MR. WOODS TO GIVE ME A C IN HISTORY.

We see the kid (he’s about 17) presenting a report card (with the title ‘Venice High School’) to his parents.

MOM: AN A- IN GOVERNMENT DAVID, WAIT UNTIL YOUR FATHER SEES THIS!

Page 19, Panel 5 David has a sheepish smile on his face.

DAVID: IT WASN’T TOO HARD MOM, JUST SOME LATE NIGHT STUDYING.


Page 20, Panel 1

We’re within a laboratory of some kind. Huge, Kirbyesque machinery is everywhere. In the middle of the room, surrounded by scientists is a gateway of some kind. Surrounding the gateway (it looks vaguely Stargate like) are 7 crystals, 4 of which are lit. Two are completely darkened but one of the remaining ones glows very slightly.

Page 20, Panel 2

We see Abaddon (always with the glow in his eyes) before the gateway. He’s speaking to a scientist.

ABADDON: ARE YOU CERTAIN ALL IS SET FOR THE OPENING?

SCIENTIST: YES MY LORD. ALL IS READY.

Page 20, Panel 3

Abaddon is smiling. It’s not a pretty sight.

ABADDON: GOOD, VERY GOOD DR. REINHART. YOU WILL BE WELL REWARDED FOR YOUR EFFORTS.

Page 20, Panel 4

Close up of Dr. Reinhart. He doesn’t appear to be fazed by Abaddon.

REINHART: SERVICE IS ITS OWN REWARD LORD ABADDON. I LIVE TO SERVE THE MASTER.

Matthew’s room again. We see the frame above in Matthew’s dream. He’s been tossing and turning all night.

Page 21, Panel 2 Matthew groans awake, and the clock on his nightstand reads 2:00.

Matthew is sitting on the edge of his bed. He appears troubled.

Matthew’s face, slightly shocked.

MATTHEW (THOUGHT BUBBLE): I WONDER…. WHATEVER IT IS, IT CAN WAIT UNTIL TOMORROW.

We see Matthew climbing back into bed, hoping for a good night’s sleep. At the foot of the bed a glow is slowly materializing.

We see Matthew sleeping peacefully. The clock now reads 3:30. Now the glow is a little bit larger.


Page 22, Panel 1

The cliffhanger for this issue…. Matthew’s once darkened room is now completely lit up. He is sitting up in bed, clutching the sheets before him. At the foot of his bed is a white robed, winged figure. He has long white hair and blue eyes. (It will be revealed that this is the angel Gabriel) The glow is emanating from him. His hand is outstretched as he calls to Matthew.

GABRIEL: MATTHEW BARKER!!! YOU HAVE BEEN CALLED AND YOU ARE CHOSEN. IT IS UP TO YOU TO DECIDE THIS DAY WHOM YOU WILL SERVE!!!

MATTHEW: WHA…WHAT!?!?!
