MSN Webtv Instant Messenger Instructions
MSNTV/Webtv Instant Messenger Instructions

Getting started

I know it's called MSNTV instead of WEBTV now but instead of changing every mention of Webtv on my pages,I've decided to leave them in.       You can learn about Instant Messenger and how to use it by clicking on the Instant Messenger(IM) link on your homepage.Click on help to take the Webtv created tour. But WebTV tours rarely cover eveything and are sometimes hard to understand. This is an attempt to help make it easier for everyone.

The first thing to know is that until the Instant Messenger can connect to it's service, everything(such as going to your e-mail) may be extremely slow ,delayed and/or almost frozen. You may have to wait for a minute or more at times.Or you may want to turn the IM off when you log off and turn it back on after you've logged on and read your e-mails or whatever. As soon as it connects you may hear tones like a harp strum,a 3 note series of chime-like tones and/or a series of 5 xylophone-like high notes.

When you have been added to someone's buddy list

If someone has already added you to their buddy list, you will hear the series of 5 xylophone-like high notes and see pink or red words scrolling across the bottom/title bar on your screen that say: "You have been added to Your Friend's(it will say their name or e-maill address) buddy list". If you see that message then you should click on options then messenger ( A SHORTCUT FOR THIS IS TO PRESS CMD AND Y AT THE SAME TIME. THAT WILL BRING UP THE IM POP-UP BOX)

Accepting a buddy

This will bring up a pop up box that tells you: "You are now on (the name or addy of the person who added you)'s buddy list.
If you'd like (name/addy) to know when you are connected to WebTV choose Allow.Otherwise choose Block."
If you click Allow, you will then see a notice that says: "You have now allowed (person's name/addy) to know when you are connected to WebTV.
Choose Make Buddy if you woud like to know when (person's name/addy)is connected." (THIS ADDS THE PERSON TO YOUR BUDDY LIST BUT YOU MAY HAVE TO ADD THEIR E-MAIL ADDY IN YOUR ADDRESS BOOK SEPARATELY)

Talking to your buddy

When you have done this, you will then hear a harp strum sound that is a signal that your buddy is online(if they are online at the time). Click on the tab at the top of the IM pop-up that says Buddies. This will bring you to your buddy list. If your buddy is online, their name will be lit up. Click on a highlighted name and it opens a screen/window to chat in. This is a direct link/private chat screen between you and the person you clicked on. Type a message in the typing field at the bottom then click send or just hit return(on a wireless keyboard). Your message will appear on the screen. Then wait for your buddy to reply. When their message posts, you will hear a single tone. Then have a conversation. (YOU CAN SURF WHILE CHATTING IN IM. SEE BELOW)

How to surf and IM at the same time

By using the cmd Y shortcut, you can surf the web while having an IM conversation. Press cmd and Y to bring up your buddy list screen. Then click on a buddy's highlighted name to connect to them. You will get a private chat screen between you and that person. Notice that the tab above that screen will have the person's name or e-mail addy. Type a message to them. Then if you would like to surf, read e-mail, or whatever, either press cmd Y again or the back button to lower the IM pop-up. When your buddy responds, you will hear a 3 note series of chime-like tones and words will scroll or crawl across the bottom/title bar at the bottom of the page. It will say: "(person's name/addy says ' whatever their message is' ". It will go across the title bar twice or more. Use cmd Y to bring up the IM pop-up directly to the chat window you have open and post your message. Then lower the window and surf some more while waiting for their response. The person you're talking to will not know that you are surfing or chatting in another screen or whatever. you're doing.

The main disadvantage of surfing while doing IM is that Webtv can't actually do 2 things at once. If you are trying to go to a site or open an e-mail or do anything else and get an instant message while your screen is down, the words start to crawl across the title bar. Then what Webtv does is ; it lets the words scroll for a milisecond then let's the site or e-mail you are trying to view load for a milisecond, then the words again and so on. Meaning that each thing goes slower.

Blocking someone who has added you to their list

If you do not want to accept the invitation to make the person a buddy then click on Block. That will bring you back to your buddy list or to the current chat screen if you were already IM-ing someone. The person will not see that you have blocked them. Your name will just never be lit up on their buddy list. It will always show on their list as you being not connected.
