I COULD NOT TURN AWAY
I passed a black man, tired and worn
as if to slavery he was born;
And as I turned to walk away,
Something made me turn and stay.
No longer black, his skin was brown,
but still with troubles laden down;
And as I turned to walk away,
Something made me turn and stay.
The brown was gone, and in its place,
a haunted, hunted redissh face;
And as I turned to walk away,
Something made me turn and stay.
And in a yellowed skin of pain,
the colors had once more changed again;
And as I turned to walk away,
something made me turn and stay.
And then I saw the children there,
dirty, hungry, in deep despair;
And as I turned to walk away,
something made me turn and stay.
In fields and facrories, women worked,
While highbred ladies stared and smirked;
And as I turned to walk away,
something made me turn and stay.
I saw a kaleidoscope appear,
and felt an awesome, tremendous fear;
And as I turned to walk away,
something made me turn and stay.
Many souls began to enter in;
Those that were clean and free of sin;
I tried, but I could not turn away,
I knew now that I must surely stay.
And the evil souls were left to lie
in the depths of hell to weep and cry;
I knew I could not turn away,
I knew that I must surely stay.
And the clean bright souls began to glow,
Like jewels their colors began to grow;
I knew I could not turn away;
I knew now that I had to stay.
And the kaleidoscope center became
brilliant white;
So bright my eyes could not stand the
light;
And a voice said "You could not turn
away:
This is why you had to stay."
"In My heavenly kingdom your angels stay;
They will never ever let you stray;
And just when you think you'll turn away,
They'll bring you there to forever stay."
