NEWSLETTER DISTRIBUTION

This newsletter is distributed via e-mail only. Every assembly has at least one officer on the distribution list. I ask those who receive it to make sure their FN and FC get a copy in a timely manner. Thank you.

COLOR CORPS 3

HONOR GUARD AT WAKES

Without exception, honors of the color corps will be made available for deceased Sir Knights of the Fourth Degree currently in good standing at the time of death. It is understood, however that the wishes of the family of the deceased member are paramount and will be given the fullest consideration. Deceased Non-Fourth Degree persons, at the discretion of the FN upon request of the survivor, may also be afforded this honor.

The commander will divide the honor guard into pairs for the watch. The guards on watch will be relieved at 15-minute intervals. Do not relieve guards during a ceremony. The commander will lead a pair of knights, with swords at carry sword position, to the casket. If this is the first watch, the knights will halt at the casket and, without command, salute with present sword and then return to carry sword. The guard will now post at each end of the casket where they will face towards each other and remain in the carry sword position.  If this is not the first watch, when the relieving knights reach the casket, they will step to one side to allow sufficient room for the old watch to stand between them. The old watch will now move on line between the commander and their relief. All will now face the casket, salute with present sword and then return to carry sword. The relief will now post. After posting, the old watch and the commander will about face and retire, still at the carry sword position.

I have highlighted a point of reference. Please discuss this with your commander.

"TO BE A PATRIOT" AWARD

Just a reminder - look ahead, plan, publicize and conduct a patriotic activity involving the community, then write it up and report it to me no later than June 30.

MASTER'S EXPENSE

The Master is not reimbursed in any way by any assembly or from Supreme for his expense in putting on the exemplification, or for his travel expense installing and visiting assemblies. Previous Masters and I have recovered these expenses by adding a fee to each exemplification dinner. Some of you have commented that the dinner is expensive. I agree. However, until Supreme or the assemblies underwrite the cost of the degree, which is substantial, this will continue. Please be assured that I have cut expenses as much as possible and have not taken any travel expense from this fee. I am audited twice a year and cannot have any more than $2000 in my account at audit time. The funds collected at the Mass are given to a charity determined by the District Friar, Fr. Lawson.

I ask the assemblies that can afford it, to help by

1.       Taking an ad in the exemplification program book, and

2.       Giving the installing officer a stipend when the assembly is installed that will cover his room cost (if needed) and gas expense.

I don’t want you to think I am complaining – I am just explaining the reason for the high dinner fee. I asked for the position of Master fully understanding the costs and problems involved, and I am not in the least regretting it. I have met so many wonderful and dedicated knights that the expense is more than worthwhile.

 EXEMPLIFICATION IN 2003

The Exemplification in 2003 will be at the Renaissance Suites in Charlotte on October 18. The room rate is $96 per night for Friday and Saturday. You may make reservations now at (704) 357-1414 or (800) 468-3571. It is a super hotel - you will love it. Plan on attending.  The candidate’s fee, set by Supreme, is $65 and includes his dinner. The dinner cost for others is $41 and the ladies luncheon is $16. There will be continental breakfast served by the host assemblies Saturday and Sunday mornings for those attending the dinner.

Honoree: The honoree for this degree will be Sir Knight Edward Comiskey from assembly 2208 Charlotte. Many of you know him so you know he is an excellent choice and very deserving of the honor.

Note to Faithful Comptrollers: When you get a form 4, keep it and send all of them together with the assembly check and registration form. Do not send the form 4 to me without the money or registration form. Get your ducks in line, and about a month before the exemplification (I will let you know the drop dead date), gather things together and send everything – candidates and guests money – with the proper form. I will have the exemplification notice at the State Convention and the State Organization meeting, and I will send the registration form to each newly elected FC and FN sometime in July. I have trouble keeping everything straight if I get several pieces from an assembly at different times instead of all at once.  Thank you.

Everyone - spread the word.  There are no meetings, just the degree and socials. The socials start Friday evening, so even though all the “official” action takes place on Saturday, plan on getting there on Friday to get “ready” and to visit with fellow knights. We have access to the clubroom for all the unofficial action, and the host assemblies have promised a great atmosphere.

NOW is the time to start recruiting new members, do not wait until the summer. Council officers, directors and chairmen are prime candidates - they are interested and dedicated knights. We need them as Fourth Degree members. Visit the councils in your area and talk it up. GO GET-EM.

ASSEMBLY ELECTIONS

It is now the time to get ready for your elections in May or June. Appoint a nominating committee and have them present a slate of candidates for office.

INSTALLATION OF OFFICERS

Plan the date of your installation of officers as soon as you can. I am getting booked up. In addition I will not be available from June 18 through July 14.

GOOD OF THE ORDER

Let us pray for those listed below who have left us.

  • Assembly 0778 – Parham Shaw

  • Assembly 0780 – George Balog

  • Assembly 0780 – Clarence Hubbard

  • Assembly 1899 – John W. Barrett (son of John B. Barrett)

A special mention here of the passing of the wife of Ray Rohlfs, PSD, FDM. Virginia Rohlfs remained extremely active with the Greensboro Assembly. She was instrumental in the registration of candidates and guests at Exemplifications held at the Greensboro Embassy Suites.
