THE SPECIAL OLYMPICS

This year, 1999, North Carolina hosted The Special Olympics. My town hosted the Danish team. The Swim team was awesome, and my family had the pleasure of hosting two atheletes.

The Olympic Torch

This is my dad, the Mayor of Benson, greeting the the last leg of the torch carriers. This was right before the actual games began.

The Danish Swim Team

This is a picture of the entire Danish swim team. They won a lot of medals, and we were so proud to host them.

Martin

This is Martin, one of the atheletes that we hosted. He loves hockey, I mean the boy is nuts over it. He is fifteen years old, and he couldn't speak any english when he visited, but communication was never a problem. He always smiled like in the picture, and he was featured in a Danish magazine for all the medals that he won.

Hans

This is the other athelete that we had the pleasure of hosting, Hans. He was a very vibrant person, he could speak english, and I enjoyed talking with him about Denmark, and being an athelete in the Special Olympics. As you can see, he won quite a few medals, and they weighed him down. I guess that's the price you pay for being good at something.
