Our Political Candidates, Past and Present

Signs of the Election

Democrat or Republican, voter or not, I think we all agree that there are a lots of "vote for me" signs. They’re staked along roadsides, in yards, and tacked to telephone poles. Some even obstruct our view of oncoming traffic. And they seem to procreate around the poll area.

These are all well and good, and they do serve a valid purpose right up to the end of Election Day. But after the election, you’d think these signs would disappear just a quickly as they appeared. Right? Not always.

This is August 2000, and months have passed since the primaries. In the distance of just 2 miles in West Asheville, I saw 3 signs – all forgotten after the election last spring.

This is LITTER, any way you look at it.

As of 8-26-00, the following candidates still have signs posted:

DON YELTON

GERALD DEAN

RICHARD VINROOT

Former Candidates, stop littering our city! I challenge YOU to be responsible for signs bearing your name. Show citizens – voters - that you are truly the responsible candidate. TAKE DOWN THOSE TRASHY SIGNS AFTER THE ELECTION!!

If your name appears above and you don’t know where your signs are located, e-mail me and I’ll refresh your memory. However, I recommend you and your supporters drive around Asheville and look at just how many (of yours and your rivals’) have been overlooked.

ELECTION DAY IS NOVEMBER 7th – PLEASE VOTE

As November approaches, I have high hopes for the men and women who are currently running for office. No matter how much mud they sling at each other, I trust these candidates will clean up behind themselves after the election is over.
