Preparation to Participate in AAT

*If you are using a dog to help in AAT, it will have to be tested first. Most of the testing can be done through the Delta Society or American Kennel Club’s Good Citizenship Test. However, many times health care facilities allow for other pets, such as cats and rabbits, that do not require testing first. It would be best to check with the place that you want to bring your animal too.

*If The animal requires testing, it would be screened in three different areas: health, behavior/training, and temperament.

*After you go through all of the necessary tests, you normally must get insurance to cover the cost of any accidents. However, under some hospitals you would be carried under their insurance, so you would need to check with whoever you are volunteering with

*You might also have to buy the animal t-shirts or certain clothing to wear while in the healthcare setting to keep the shedding down.

*The animal must be bathed every time before a session of AAT.

*It might also be beneficial to join a therapy group in your local area.
