in Orange County

Mission Statement:
ABODE exists to ensure that all Orange County residents and workers
have access to safe, decent, and affordable housing within the County.
Furthermore, ABODE will promote the values of inclusiveness, empower-
ment, and sustainability in its efforts.

THE SCARCITY OF AFFORDABLE HOUSING IN ORANGE COUNTY
Housing is increasingly unaffordable for Orange County's workforce. Teacher, policemen, childcare workers, and other hard-working people are being forced to live farther away from their workplaces because of a number of factors. Among these is the high cost of homeownership due to skyrocketing land and home prices. (The average price for a new home in November 1997 was $265,000.) Additionally, the need to house 17,000 area students off campus has put a tremendous upward pressure on rents. Constructive efforts being made by various housing organizations, public officials, and financial institutions are not making enough of a difference.
ABODE has committed to make a positive change!
