WHAT WE'VE BEEN DOING ABOUT IT...

The increasing lack of housing diversity in Orange County is unacceptable. A greater range of housing services, from shelters and SRO's to rental units and homeownership, must be promoted and provided. ABODE: Coalition for Housing Diversity in Orange County has been formed to see that this goal is acheived.

Since May 1997, representatives of housing organizations and citizen activists have been meeting in roundtable forums and committee gatherings. In July 1998, the ABODE steering committee presented a blueprint and workplan for this newly-forming coalition to concerned citizens and representatives from many of the county's housing organizations. A follow-up meeting is scheduled for early November, at which time the steering committee will submit a revised blueprint for approval and adoption.

Among ABODE's most noteworthy achievements has been the publication of
Who Can Afford to Live in Orange County?: An Assessment of Orange County's Housing Stock and Affordability.
