For once... something NOT obligatory. The Andy Warhol quotes page.

These were all found in this FABULOUS book about Andy Warhol, filled with quotes from both him and others, about him. Not facts, just quotes. It is a must-read, if you are a true Warhol fan. It's called Andy Warhol in His Own Words. Mike Wrenn is the person recognized on the cover, probably for compiling all the quotes and writing the introduction.

"I don't think my art has any lasting value."
"No matter how good you are, if you're not promoted right you won't be remembered."
"I can't see how I was ever 'underground' since I've always wanted people to notice me."
"Second-hand clothes?...Oh no, I couldn't wear anything used."
"I believe in low lights and trick mirrors. A person is entitled to the lighting they need."
"I'm really afraid to feel happy because it never lasts."
"You're better off putting all your energy into your work. Sex takes up too much time."
"If everybody's not a beauty, then nobody is."
"As I always say, one's company, two's a crowd, three's a party."
"Publicity is like eating peanuts. Once you start you can't stop."
"I voted once, in the fifties. I don't remember which election. I pulled the wrong lever because I was confused. I couldn't figure out how to work the thing. There was no practice model outside. And then I got called for jury duty, and I wrote back 'Moved'. I've never voted again."
"If I'd gone ahead and died, I would be a cult figure now."
"I look like a St. Laurent dress...I've a lot of stitches."
"I don't know where the artificial stops and the real begins."
"They're experimental films. I call them that because I don't know what I'm doing."
"Wasted space is any space that has art in it."
"Don't talk to everyone. Be aloof."
"I never wanted to be a painter. I wanted to be a tap dancer."
"Pop art is for everyone. I don't think art should be only for the select few, I think it should be for the mass of American people, and they usually accept art anyway."
"I really like comic strips... Well, I like the colours and the balloons. I think people should always talk with balloons over their heads."
"If you look at something long enough, I've discovered, the meaning goes away."
"You'd be surprised how many people want to hang an electric chair on their living-room wall. Specially if the background colour matches the drapes."
"The less something has to say, the more perfect it is."
"I like empty walls. As soon as you put something on them they look terrible."
"Intellectuals are a bore."
"I read an article on me once that described my machine-method of silk-screen copying and painting- 'What a bold and audacious solution, what depths of the man are revealed in this solution!' What does that mean?"
"People ask me if I'm shocked that people pay thousands of dollars for one of my paintings. Well... why should I be shocked? I think it's wonderful."
"If I weren't me, I think I'd like to be Jackie Kennedy. She's a very glamorous woman, and I'd really like to learn some of her judo techniques."

Go back.
