The James Stewart Line

Of Franklin/Warren Counties NC

1........................................ James Stewart

b: ca 1775 Found in Granville County NC 1830 NC and left Will in Granville Co NC October 15, 1835

died 1835

WHERE WAS HE FROM 1790 - 1810? Oral history says that they were natives of England came to America from Scotland-no proof but delayed cert of birth for their son says born Scotland- family stated they arrived and wife who was with child and also traveled along with their daughter.

Information below from Darlene Arminta, A Nancy Stewart Edwards Desc. that the above have the following Children; Sallie's Will below.

Darlene has information of all these as children to James above. Sallie's estate records proves one daughter and Joice Pleasants and THomas A. Stuart as her children, also names grandchildren in Panola co MS

Contact Darlene Nancy Stewart {Edwards}

    Nancy married Thomas L.Edwards in Granville Co North Carolina Nov.23,1835 .Nancy and Thomas were Darlene's gr gr gr grandparents.They migrated to Panola Co. Ms.from Granville Co NC

    Nancy 's daughter Sarah Edwards Davis Forester is Darlene's Gr Gr Grandmother.

    Hilliard Eveline Stewart{Breedlove}

    Joyce Stewart {Pleasants}

    Katherine Lucenia Stewart { Watkins}

    Mary Eliza Stewart {Hoyle}

    Rosa Stewart {James Stewart}

      Sarah Stewart {Faulkner}

      SHe and James Stewart were probably the parents of the James, Henry and Catherine Stewart...children in the household of Thomas A Stewart and also Joicy Stewart Pleasants in 1850 granville co NC. Rosa married a James Stewart Granville County NC 1824, additional children of them below, I believe Sally/Sarah and James were finished having children by this time

      Granville County Henderson School DIstrict 1842 lists:
      JAMES STEWART parent/guardian
      Susan b 1832 age 10
      William b 1828 age 16
      Henry, same as above?, born 1834, age 8
      all the above probably chidlren of James and Rosa/Rosey Stewart STEWART

      Family lived in Granville Co NC before 1830 and 1840 (Sarah Stewart) nearby James Stewart possibly James and ROsa, caught in the county changes in 1820 they are found in warren Co NC and transcribed as James Steward

      They may be the same James Stewart family in 18oo Halifax, Halifax Co, NC

      There is a James STUARD in 1810 that could be our James

      Warren co Nc marriage to 1868 > > Stewart, Dicy to Pleasants, Thomas 13 Jul 1830 born 1813

      > Stewart, Eveline to H Breedlove, Shelton 22 Dec 1832 born 1815ish

      > > Stewart, Lucena to Watkins, Demcy 02 Jul 1834 born 1819ish

      > Stewart, Martha to Kearsey, Hill 20 Dec 1821 born 1816ish

      > Stewart, Rosey to Stewart, James 27 Sep 1824 born 1809ish

      b: in Native of England

      There is a Sally Stewart living with Thomas A. STewart in Granville co 1840 so I know his mother was Sally and probalby the widow Sarah on 1840 granville co nc cnesus

      Below is a transcribed LWT of a James Stewart : >

      > Written 15 October 1835 and probated Granville Nov Court 1835:

      > Recorded in Granville Will Book 13, pg 281; >

      > Mentions "my beloved wife" and "maintenance and support of our beloved children," BUT does not provide the name of the wife or the (apparently multiple) children. The only child mentioned by name is... "my son Thomas A. Stuart": I give and bequeath unto my son Thomas A. Stuart the tract of land on which I reside, also one horse of the value of fifty dollars, one cow and calf bed and furniture, sow and pigs, ten barrels of corn, five hundred pounds pork, which legacy is to take place at the death of my beloved wife to my said son Thomas A. and his heirs forever.

      Executor named was a Jno Eaton. Witnesses: John OBrien Jr, Thomas Wilson, and Samuell Edwards.

      Family oral history states this line descends from Armistead Stewart and Sallie Little, natives of England. I'm not yet convinced that our Sally is an Evans, all of my data shows she's too young in 1791 to be marrying. Oral history hasn't been too far off yet, our Armistead is Thomas Armistead and wife Sally, one grandaughter bears the middle name LITTLE, also James and Sally/Sarah named a daughter HILLIARD, so I'm curious that this a surname of one of the parents mothers I've yet to locate a marriage license or registration other than a Sally EVANS and James Stewart marrying in 1791 Warren Co NC, which is where a James Stewart lived in 1830 also, unsure before this date but looks like the James and Sarah in 1830 warren may be a different James and Sally found in neighboring counties before 1830 and our James died in Granville 1835. BUT, the Sally below was probably our Thomas A Stewart's mother, cannot be the same Sally Evans as she was born 1783, too young to marry in Warren COunty in 1791. So clearly 2 James Stewart families. Thomas A seems to always be in NC and his mother Sally was listed in census as being from VA. All the children have delayed certificates of birth in Vance CO as being born in SCOTLAND.

      1850 Granville Co NC Census Index

      There is a Sallie Stewart (born 1783)aged 77 on the 1860 Census of Vance co NC, Epping district, living with a Mary POOL and children. Clearly this is not the same Sally Evans in Warren married to a James Stewart in 1791, she is too young to marry in 1791. No husband was listed for Mary, she being head of household. Was this Sallie Stewart of England? Was this Mary her grandaughter somehow? This Mary fits the age of Mary Pleasants, daughter of Thomas Pleasants and Joicy Diggs Stewart, Joicy being Sallie and Thomas Armistead's daughter. Any leads greatly appreciated.

      Grave located in Vance Co, NC on the property of Henry Dickerson. There are about 100 graves located here identifiable by the stone markers but with no markings on them. Who are these people buried here? James Stewart and wife Sallie? Pinnells or Green's maybe? If anyone knows please email me. Thanks

      Possible James Stewart STUART ca 1810

      Possibly the father of unknown origin children mentioned below; James, Henry and Catherine Stewart unknown mother. Also, no son other than Thomas A was mentioned in will of James Stewart LWT 1835

      ........................ 2 Thomas Armstead Stewart

      b: January 05, 1814-Scotland-according to a certificate of delayed birth in Vance Co, NC. Others have told us he was born on the ship to America. d: March 21, 1880

      NOTE: I have found several marriages in Granville Co, NC where a TA or Thomas A. Stewart served as J.P. or B.M.. Was our Thomas A. Stewart the Justice of Peace in Granville in 1858-1863? Or was this another Thomas Stewart as I know there was another Stewart family in Granville co NC but who were from Canada? So far I have not found another Thomas Stewart in the area

      NOTE: Thomas Stuart was the Executor of Rial Pinnells will in May 1852, Etna Pinnell's father.

      ..................These Children found in Thomas A and Maggie Stewart household and Catherine was found in Joicy and Thomas Pleasants home in 1850, are these Rosa and James Stuart's children, THomas A Stewart's neice and nephews?

      ..................James Stewart b. 1836 NC according to Granville co NC census

      ..................Henry Stewart b.1834 NC according to Granville co NC census

      ..................Catherine Stewart b.1833 NC according to Granville co NC census

      The above Catherine and Henry was found living in the household with Thomas Pleasants and his wife Joicy Diggs Stewart and family in 1850 Granville co NC.

      Mary Pleasants was found in the household with Thomas A. STewart and his wife Etna and family in 1850 Granville NC as was James Stewart.

      Could these be Thomas' sister, Rosy and her husband, JAMES Stewart's children, not sure his death date or what happened to children

      Any clues gladly welcomed! ................... ............ +Etna V. F.Pinnell

Nora was the dau of W.W. Ellis b.1854 and Sally Mann b. 1852. She and her husband built a 2 story home that stood in Henderson, Vance co NC on U.S.1, in the 1930's and sometime after that, the upstairs rooms were rented to school teachers. Mary b.1835 - A Mary G. Pleasants married Charles E. Askew February 5, 1851 Granville Co, NC - Thomas A. Stewart bm

there is a female Askew who is a teacher b 1859 below in the household with the Stewart's and his sister and family Parthenia HESTER who married in 1851, could this be her daughter who is now teaching and living with this family? I know in the early 1900's the Stewart's rented out bedrooms in the upstairs part of the home to teachers, since Nora Ellis Stewart was also a teacher. At any rate the age of the Askew teacher fits to be the daughter of the above Mary Pleasants and charles Askew. And is this marriage indeed the Mary Pleasants who is the daughter of Joicy Diggs Stewart and Thomas M. Pleasants? Thanks for any leads cousins out there.
