Moore Wins Season First at Hickory

Despite the great action at Hickory on Sunday, drivers and fans were heavy-hearted. Drivers arrived to learn that friend and colleague, Dan Burns, had passed away. Dan drove the 69s SMODA modified at the Memorial Day York Race. He hit the wall in his heat and suffered a fractured neck. He died on Saturday of complications. He is survived by his wife, Lorraine, children, Sam and Brandy, as well as two grandchildren. Calling hours will be held Wednesday from 4-9 and Thursday from 2-9 at the Wharton-Herrick Funeral Home on Cliff Mine Road, Imperial, PA. The funeral is Friday at 11:00am at St. Columbkille Church, RT 30, Imperial. Cards may be sent to 123 Marshall Street, Imperial, PA 15126.

Rusty Moore broke a winless streak in the Stocks at Hickory this weekend, capturing his first feature win of the season. Jim Young and Russ Dunn both entered victory lane for the fourth time this season in the Micros and SMODA Modifieds respectively. Goob Schuller took home his second win of the season in the 305 Sprints.

The 305 Sprint feature was up first with Schuller and Nathan Hines pacing the field. Schuller jumped into the early lead. The race was paused only once when the red flag waved at halfway for Brad Miller. Miller took a hard tumble over the turn three wall, landing on his wheels on the return road. Fortunately, he walked away uninjured. The race resumed and went green the rest of the way with Schuller picking up the win. Shawn Watkins finished second, followed by Maria Mayerchak. Chris Matthews was fourth and Arnie Kent, driving Doug Anderson's car rounded out the top five. Heat wins went to Schuller and Nathan Hines

Tim Graham and Jim Young brought the Micro Sprint feature to the start line. Young took the lead from the drop of the green, with Graham dropping back to third and Tom Jasen taking second. On lap six though, Greg Stephens took over the second spot and remained there for the rest of the race. At that point, the red flag flew for J.J. Kapuchuck who took an easy roll coming out of turn four. He was uninjured. The rest of the race went green with Young picking up his fourth win of the season. Stephens was second with Bryan Shimek working his way from sixteenth to the third finishing spot. Nathan Gramley finished fourth followed by Tim Robertson. Graham, Young and Jasen each won a heat race.

The SMODA Modified feature was the third feature. Bob McCann and Shawn Domhoff shared the pole positions. McCann took the top spot at the start, but his lead would only last until the ninth lap. That was when Russ Dunn, who had started tenth, would take over the lead. McCann would have to settle for a second place finish. Herm Meyers finished third with Bruce Driestadt in fourth. Driestadt had charged to the front from starting tenth. Dave Strickler was fifth. McCann and Shawn Domhoff won the heats.

The Stock feature took to the track with Rusty Moore and Keith Nagy on point. Moore took the lead at the green and posted a wire-to-wire win. Nagy dropped back to fourth on the start when Terry Kroner and Chuck Taylor slipped by. Nagy was able to battle his way back into second by the checkered flag though. When he did so, he left Kroner to finish third and Taylor to finish fourth. Shaun Hooks weaved his way up to fifth after starting eleventh. Heats went to Moore and Nagy.
