Hawley and Williams Win at Hickory

A great crowd was on hand for Memorial Day racing action at Hickory Speedway. There was great racing in all three divisions on hand with Jimmy Hawley winning the 410 Sprint show, Bob Williams winning the York Series Triathlon race and Ron Iorio picking up the Stock win.

The 410 Sprints were the first division to run their feature. Over 30 cars turned out for the race, and a full 22-car field came trackside for the A-Main. The caution flag flew numerous times during the race, the red flag coming out once for Scott Priester's wild flip down the front straightaway. Joe McEwen and Rob Eyler led the field to the initial start with Eyler taking the early lead with Ed Lynch following. On lap seven, Jimmy Hawley, who started fifth, gained the advantage. He and Lynch would battle it out for several laps before Brian Ellenberger and Mike Lutz were added to the mix. The pair relegated Lynch to fourth. Lutz took over second on lap 16 and that was how they came across the line at the finish; Hawley, Lutz, Ellenberger and Lynch. Gary Edwards rounded out the top five. Eyler, McEwen, Lynch, and Jamie Smith won the heats.

The York Series drivers pulled onto the track next for their 30 lap main event. Todd Roncaglione and Bob Williams paced the field with Williams gaining the early advantage. His lead only lasted for two laps because Bob McCann took over on the third circuit. It wasn't long before a 3-way battle for the lead began between McCann, Alan Dellinger, and Williams. McCann and Dellinger swapped the top spot several times and it looked like McCann would nab his first series victory until he was sidelined early with transmission problems. That left Dellinger to fight of Williams' advances for the lead. The pair was battling it out when the red flag flew for the overturned car of Jeff Sharp who flipped after he and Mike Anderson were involved in a front stretch incident. Both drivers were uninjured. Dellinger managed to defend the top spot until the last lap when electrical problems forced him to drop off the pace. Williams held on for the win in the caution-filled event. Dellinger would have to be happy with fifth. Jim Fronts was second, Holly Nelson was third and Mike Hess was fourth. Heat wins went to Fred Bratchie, Williams, Hess, McCann, and Roncaglione.

The Stock car race was the quickest race of the evening with only two caution flags. Ron Iorio and Jeff Walters brought the field to the green flag with Iorio taking the early lead. Doug Iorio challenged him for the lead and took it over on lap five. He would only hold the lead for that circuit because Ron would take over again and remain on point for the win. Doug Iorio finished second followed by Gary Robinson, Rusty Moore, and Shaun Hooks. Ray Gregory, Rusty Moore and Gary Johns won the heats.
