Third Time's a Charm for Young at Hickory

Last Sunday's weather was certainly a contrast from the previous week's, but there was no contrast in the excitement level as all divisions put on quite a competitive show. Jim Young won his third straight in the Micro division (as well as his third straight of the weekend) and 1999 Champion Bob McCann was on top again in the SMODA modifieds. Maria Mayerchak picked up her first win in the 305 division and Shaun Hooks won his second feature in three weeks in the Stocks.

The Micro Sprints took to the track first with J.J. Kapuchuck and Tim Robertson at the helm. Kapuchuck grabbed the early lead but Jim Young was charging hard from the twelfth starting spot. By lap six he had bested Kapuchuck and never looked back, capping off a very successful weekend. Robertson also made his way around Kapuchuck on lap 11. He would spend the ensuing laps battling with Bryan Shimek for second, eventually coming out on top. Shimek finished third with Tom Jasen (up from starting eleventh) in tow. Kapuchuck rounded out the top five. Shimek, Young, and Jasen brought home heat wins.

The SMODA Modifieds came out for their feature next. J.B. Dandy and John Strickler shared the pole with Strickler nabbing the number one spot at the green. He held on until lap six when Shawn Domhoff took over. McCann was right behind him and made his move for the lead at lap thirteen, picking up his first Hickory win of the season. Domhoff would have to settle for second. Chuck List Sr. followed him across the line, followed by Dale Fuller and Russ Dunn. Jeff Haefke and McCann won the heats.

Chris Matthews and Nathan Hines paced the 305 Sprint car field. At the drop of the green, Matthews had the lead with Maria Mayerchak nabbing second from starting fourth. The pair would run that way until Goob Schuller passed Mayerchak for second on the eighth circuit. He was only able to hold onto the spot for four laps though, due to a spin on lap twelve. When the yellow came out on lap fifteen, it became apparent that Matthews had a flat tire. On the restart, Mayerchak would take over and finish out the race in the top spot. Schuller was able to come back up to second after a last lap pass on Shawn Watkins. Paul Long was fourth, with Jim Kurpakus rounding out the top five.

Just as the sun was setting, the Stock cars came track side. Bob McConnell and Shaun Hooks brought the field around to the green. McConnell took the early lead, but Gary Miller passed him for the lead on lap seven. Miller looked strong, but was sidelined with two to go. Hooks held onto the top spot through the last restart and brought home his second win of the season. 1999 Sportsman of the Year Rick Norco finished second with Rusty Moore following. Jim Davis and McConnell rounded out the top five. Heats went to Moore and Davis.
