The following information was submitted by Richard Rogerson.
I began a search for Lilley Records about ten years ago when I discovered Daniel Rogerson M. Hannah Lilley, daughter of Thomas and Sarah Lilley. While at the Arcives copying the wills of the Lilley brothers, I discovered that John Lilley married Caziah Rogerson, Daughter of Daniel and Hannah Rogerson. The Berkley Register contains the statement: John Lilly married Jane Sweatman. John Lilly was a son of John and wife Ales (Alice) Late of Cheshire in olde England. That Register also lists the Births of John, Thomas, William, and Ann Lilly, beginning with John around 1672. Apparently John and Ales moved to Perquimans. around 1670, and there reared a family. Their children were John, Thomas, William, and Ann. John senior died around 1688, leaving an estate of cattle to the orphan children. This information was found in several court papers of Perquimans County. In 1690 John spelled his name Lilly. Thomas spelled the surname Lilley. These documents tell that they were all Brothers.
The will of Daniel Snukes, dated 1712, (Perquimans County) mentions Thomas Lilley and Childern. The will of William Kitching in 1736, (Perquimans County)lists Thomas Lilley and Children. The 1702 tax list of Perquimans County shows Thomas living with Daniel Snukes. In 1712 Thomas and Daniel Snukes applied for patents. The patent of Thomas Lilley was for 500 acres. Snukes received 3 Patents, all beside Thomas Lilley. With the death of Snukes in 1712 the patents were granted to William Kitching in 1713. 300 acres of this land fell to Daniel Rogerson by the will of Daniel Snourk. The Discription by Kitching actually located this Land in Perquimans County.
After John Lilly married Jane Sweatman, she died. He next married Hannah Phelps, widow of Henry Phelps. Their childred were Hannah, John, and Margaret. Hannah married James Sitterson in 1694. In the will of Thomas Harvey, he refers to Hannah Sitterson as Aunt Hannah. John, the son of John and Hannah Lilly, also had a son named John who married Caziah Rogerson.
Extensive information on this family is contained in the Martin County, North Carolina Heritage Book.
