Edmund Went Home

Five years ago my son was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. The tumor was embeded in his stomach by the kidney and liver. Needless to say we were not aware of the long and emotional rollercoaster of life we would be on.

As we arrived at UMC in Tucson, Arizona, my son Edmund was almost 9 years old, scheduled for exploratory surgery and was going to have a catheder installed in his chest to help administer chemo, bloodwork, and everything else his little body would need. This was a terrifying experience for us all.

While we were there, a little boy named Jaime came to visit him. Jaime was also from our hometown Douglas, and had been battling cancer for 2 years. He went over and showed Edmund his catheder and scars and before long proved to Edmund that this was a piece of cake and they became buddies. After a long seven months of treatments my son's battle was over. He died in February.

Emotionally, I can never explain the pain and confusion. How could such a good healthy boy be so sick? What did I do wrong? All the guilt and loneliness began to sink in.

About 3 months later I saw Jaime and his parents at the park. His mother Annette said she needed to share something with me. She told me that after Edmund's funeral they were at home and Jaime wanted to know why everybody was crying at the funeral. Annette said that perhaps because we were sad and were going to miss Edmund.

Jaime responded, "But Mom, Edmund went Home!"

He said it with such a big smile and was confused because we should be happy for Edmund. Can you imagine the faith of this young man?

On November 5th, Jaime too recieved his wings. Now they are both home together where there is no suffering and sadness. We too should have the faith of a child in order to understand life more thoroughly.
