My Favorite Things About Sewing

Cheaper than therapy I like it!

I made my first article of clothing in high school. It was a plain t-shirt with short sleeves and a ribbed collar. It wasn't very good, but I had learned enough to get hooked on sewing! I got my sewing machine a few years later, as one of the first gifts from my husband. He really is a sweetheart! My first sewing attempts were awful. They were never worn, and chalked up as learning experiences.

By the time that my first daughter was a year old I'd had much more practice and could make her some really cute stuff to wear. I really enjoy sewing for the kids, it takes less fabric and the patterns are so cute. Summer clothes are my favorite to make. I like adding cute buttons, eyelet or rickrack to spice things up. My older daughter is nine years old now, and fussier about what she wears, but my five year old daughter still lets me dress her up (like a doll!)
This jumper I made for Amanda when she was starting Young Kindergarten, at age 4. It has a zipper in the back, and the fabric was Precious Moments border print. I added the eyelet because I like the feminine touch. She was so cute in it! I had never put in a zipper before, and found out during the making of the jumper that I had to order a zipper foot for my sewing machine! The first zippers I put in were a little (really alot!) crooked, but at least they were in the back. I'll have to dig around in the attic to see if I can find this pattern for Sarah...

This is THE Lambchop dress. I made it for Amanda when she was five years old, now Sarah is five and she wears it. This has always been one of my favorite dresses. It is one of the few items that I have made and in which I put a zipper. Usually I like buttons or elastic. I think the Peter Pan collar is so cute for little girls. I am teaching Amanda to sew a sundress, but it is going slow. She needs a little more patience and to take her time. She'll get it.

This picture is of Amanda pushing Sarah in her wheelchair in the first annual Old Fashioned Pemberton Day parade. The children were supposed to dress up, and Amanda wore the cheerleading costume that I had made for her one Halloween. She took the second place ribbon for her costume! Yeah!!! I think Amanda was 7 years old and Sarah was 4 years old in this picture. They got their picture in the newspaper and some of the article was about them.
