Both arguments by Thomas Sowell and Jesse Peterson describe and give examples of how racism is exaggerated in the United States. Thomas Sowell’s column “Recycle Racism” describes how current newspaper stories about racism are the same stories that have been printed in the past. He describes how the articles do not take into account all the statistics and are only trying to create a racial situation when there is not one. For example, whites get more loans because the majority of whites come from extended families that have wealth unlike many blacks. On the other hand Jesse Peterson’s column titled “Truth: Solution to black America’s moral poverty” describes how racism has been blown out of proportion and that people are afraid to tell the truth about people because they are afraid of being called racist. Along with people being afraid of being called racist other prominent whites and “angry liberal blacks” take advantage of every situation to call someone racist so they look like they are fighting for something. An example was used in his article describing how President George W. Bush is much more considerate and moral than Bill Clinton. Even though the facts show that President Bush cares more about blacks and treated them better black and white democrats support Clinton and denounce Bush is just simply because he is one of them. These people are looking out for themselves instead of the greater good of the people they represent. This article relies more on an emotional argument than Thomas Sowell’s and I think does a much better job in describing how racism has gotten out of hand in the United States.
