Buddy's Bluegrass Page

Introduction

Hello. My name is Buddy Zincone and these pages tell the story of my involvement in bluegrass music. Sometime during the year 1965, when I finally convinced myself that I was actually going to finish my Ph.D. dissertation and would have time to enjoy a hobby, I bought an Ode open-backed longneck banjo for $110. I had been reminded of my fondness for Bluegrass at picking sessions I attended in Charlottesville, Va. and when my friend Don Westin learned to play recognizeable banjo in a month, I figured I could do it in a year. I took a little longer than that, but good friends among the students at East Carolina University and their philosophy of "take no prisoners" bluegrass, enabled me to learn the music fairly well. Over the years, I have owned the Ode, and a Gibson RB100, RB250 (1956), and Grenada (1993).

I have played in two or three groups since 1966. Some were composed of students (except for me and my wife Maria) and others folks whom I have met here or there. From 1974 to 1984 I concentrated on teaching my children Molly and Alice the music and they continue to play today. Off and on since 1972, I have played with Peter Temple and the Tar River Boys.
