In 1771, Wake County North Carolina was formed from Cumberland County to the south, Johnston County to the east, and Granville County to the north. I looked through these three counties for given names and related surnames that were also common in Anson and Montgomery Counties NC. I looked in particular at the GREEN and THOMAS surnames. I found no relations to the north and east, but to the south, sthe few surviving records of Cumberland County present a faint trail of part of our early ancestors.
