Daughter of Charles Love
Born ca. 1801 in then Rutherford County, Charity is the daughter of Charles and Phareby Osborne Love. She married 10 May 1821 William Hendrick. Born ca. _______, he is the son of _________________.

Following the death of Charity’s father, William Hendrick and James Love sold interests in the estate (C-137, Rutherford NC) to their brother-in-law Thomas Wilson. Dated 6 Oct 1847, they sold "two separate tracts of land belonging to the estate of Charles Love, deceased." One tract was 102 1/2 acres and the other contained 78 acres. This transaction was witnessed by Richard Champion and D. Birchette.

William Hendrick died 24 May 1859 and is buried at Double Shoals Baptist Church Cemetery. Loose estate papers indicate that William Hendrick died in debt. As acting administrator, brother-in-law Thomas Wilson petitioned the courts to allow the sale of land holdings in order to pay both debt and settlement costs. The actually petition contains valuable information about the family. It states, “William Hendrick late of the County aforesaid departed this life on or about the 24 day of May 1859.” And then reads:

“Your petitioner further showeth that the intestate at the time of his death was seized and possessed in fee simple of a tract of land situated in said county adjoining the lands of George Thompson, Hamiliton Horne, W. L. Eskridge & others and containing three hundred and fifty six acres of the value of six dollars per acres, that he owns no other real estate, and that said land upon his death descended to his children Charles Hendrick, Polly Ann wife of Thomas Wilson, Nancy wife of H. M. Gladden, W. D. Hendrick, Charity Caroline Hendrick, Margaret N, wife of R. C. Eskridge, Barbra wife of Jonathan Spangler, T. W. Hendrick and the heirs of John Hendrick, deceased, namely John W. T. Hendrick, Barbara Elizabeth Hendrick, Mary Jane Hendrick & Wincy Hendrick as infants under twenty one years of age, and without guardians. The said land is subject, however, to the dower of Charity Hendrick the widow of the intestate. . .”

Charity Caroline Hendrick died 21 Jul 1884 and is buried beside her husband at Double Shoals Baptist Church Cemetery in Cleveland County. As per her stone, she lived to be 79 years, 3 months, and 26 days. The children of William and Charity C. Love Hendrick are:

A. Charles Hendrick

Born ca. 1823, Charles is enumerated in 1850 as 27 years of age living in his parents home. It appears he was married at that time to Susy aged 21. Their children are 6 John W., 4 Nancy C., 2 Thomas W., and 4/12 Charles L.

B. Mary “Polly” Ann Hendrick

Born ca. 1824, Mary Ann Hendrick married Thomas Wilson in the early 1840’s. The 1850 census enumerates the family as: 28 Thomas Wilson, 26 Mary A., 6 Sarah A., and 3 Charity M.
C. John Hendrick

Born ca. 1825, John Hendrick married Sinai in the mid 1840’s. The 1850 census enumerates the family living next to John’s parents. John died prior to the 1859 death of his father. The estate of William Hendrick identifies the following children born to John and Sinai Hendrick:

Born ca. 1825, Nancy Love is enumerated in 1850 as 22 years of age living in the home of her parents. She married first Hosea M. Gladden. He was born 29 Sep 1828, the son of _________________. Hosea M. Gladden enlisted in CSA Co. F, 56th Reg. NC. Hosea was discharged after providing his brother-in-law Jonathan Spangler as a substitute. Enlisting again on 27 Oct 1863, he was wounded in action 20 Apr 1864 at Plymouth NC. Hosea M. Gladden died from abdominal wounds 25 Apr 1864. The children of Hosea and Nancy Hendrick Gladden are:

F. Charity Caroline Hendrick

Born 24 May 1833, Charity married G. R. Stockton. He was born 1 Oct 1842. Charity died 3 Feb 1897 and is buried at Double Shoals Baptist Church. George died 5 Aug 1917 and is buried beside his wife.

G. Margaret N. Hendrick

Born _ , Margaret married R. Calvin Eskridge. He served in CSA Co. C, 55th Reg. NC.
H. Barbara Hendrick

Born 17 Aug 1837, Barbara married 23 Sep 1856 Jonathan Spangler in Ruther ford County NC. Born 31 Aug 1837, he is the son of Absolum B. and Martha London Spangler. Jonathan enlisted in CSA Co. F, 56th Reg. NC in the place of his brother-in-law Hosea M. Gladden. Jonathan died 4 Feb 1867 and is buried at Zion Baptist in Shelby NC. Barbara died 14 Mar 1914. She is buried at Double Shoals Baptist Church. The children of Jonathan and Barbara Hendrick Spangler are:
A. John Thomas Spangler Born 29 Aug 1857, John married 17 Dec 1878 Mary Ann Landrum Green. Born 1 Dec 1862, she is the daughter of John and Sarah McSwain Green. John died 11 Spe 1939 and Mary Ann died 30 Jan 1953. They ae buried at Double Shoals Baptist Church Cemetery.
B. William Schenck Spangler Born 14 Sep 1859, William married 7 Sep 1882 Hulda M. Crow. She was born 4 May 1861. William died 5 Jul 1928 and is buried at Double Shoals Baptist Church Cemetery.
C. Martha Missouri Spangler Born 13 Apr 1861. Martha married 1 Apr 1880 James McSwain Green. Born 28 Jun 1858, he is the son of John and Sarah McSwain Green. Martha died 24 Mar 1905 and James died 22 Dec 1936. They are buried at Double Springs Baptist Church Cemetery.
D. James Webb Spangler Born 14 Jul 1865, James married 1 Feb 1888 Carrie Emily Laughlin. Born 19 Oct 1871, she is the daughter of P. and Margaret Tallent Laughlin. James Webb Spangler died 22 Apr 1925 and Carrie died 7 Jan 1964. They are buried at Double Shoals Baptist Church Cemetery.
Absom Dixon Spangler Born 5 Jul 1867, Absom married 1 Dec 1887 Nannie Patience Green. Born 3 Sep 1867, she is the daughter of John and Sarah McSwain Green. Nannie died 20 Apr 1925 and Absom died 17 Nov 1946. They are buried at Double Shoals Baptist Church.

I. Thomas W. Hendrick

T homas W. Hendrick was born ca. 1843. He enlisted 18 Apr 1861 in CSA Co. E. 12th Reg. NC. He was present and accounted for until being killed at Malvern Hill VA on 1 Jul 1863.
