Three Northwest cadets successfully completed the Navy JROTC Leadership Academy conducted in Norfolk, Virginia. Cadets Amanda Brown, Mike Carroll and John Rily completed the week long training sessions that prepares cadets for leadership roles in the Northwest NJROTC Unit this school year. The training places the cadets in real life scenarios and teaches useful techniques for problem solving as a leader. Additionally advanced military drill, and organizational skills are stressed at this Academy. Top cadets from North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, West Virginia and the District of Columbia are selected to attend. The Cadets are put through rigorous academic and physical test throught the week culminating in graduation at Oceana Naval Air Station, Virginia Beach, Va.

Fifteen new cadets (10 male/5 female) will attend Mini-Boot Camp sponsored by McDowell High School NJROTC in Marion, NC. The week long training evolution involves basic military drill, physical training, proper wearing of the uniform, orienteering, repelling, self-defense, water survival and safety. Cadets also attend classes on military etiquette, rate and rank structure, military time and the phonetic alphabet. Daily inspections stress attention to detail. A confidence course builds self-esteem and teamwork. Graduates are advanced to the rank of cadet seaman to start the school year.
