A Basic Guide to Planting Bulbs

Seasonal Tips

Early Summer

Clean up.
Pinch the heads off faded flowers before they set seed. Let the leaves die naturally. Dig up spring-blooming bulbs (and some summer-blooming bulbs in cold climates) and store them in a dry, dark place for replanting the next year.

Summer

Planting bulbs for fall.
Plant fall-flowering bulbs over the summer months.

WEATHER WATCH

In warmer naborhoods, give bulbs a fake winter. Place bulbs in the refigerator for Eight(8) or Nine(9) weeks to trick them into dormancy, that way they can store energy for the new growth. DON'T Put the bulbs in the same refigerator with fruit. As the fruit ripens, it produces a gas called ethylene that will stop your bulbs from flowering.
