The Banana Phenomenon
Bananas. A simple fruit, originating from Southeast Asian and introduced into Africa, that come in a variety of sizes and is usually yellow when ripe. Having a curved shape, the ripe fruit is easily peeled and eaten raw or cooked. Inside depending upon variety and ripeness, a soft, semi-sweet, light colored core awaits to be eaten. Bananas that are very ripe start having spots on their coat. It is this stage when the banana begins getting sweeter and sweeter and mushier and mushier until it eventually rots. Coming in a variety of sizes, from bananas smaller than your palm to ones thicker than your wrist, many humans consume this fruit every day. They peel the banana from the side opposite the stem and take a bite of the core, the essence of the banana. The core is the life of the banana, something the banana has used its whole life to create and compose. Once the core is eaten, the skin is left lifeless and is then tossed into a dangerous species of what the common person calls a “trashcan” before seeing the result of the dead epidermis. What then happens to this outer layer after its core has been consumed?
A scientist, whom shall be referred to as “Jack” (even though this is not the scientist’s real name) because it is a common name like “John Smith,” has conducted multi-million dollar research on this phenomenon, just as many scientists have spent millions, maybe billions, of dollars on porifera-research. After consuming the nucleus of the banana, the epidermis appears to darken more and more, eventually resembling the skin of a homo sapien sapien of African descent. Can humans extract some information about humanity from this fact like priests discover predictions from the Bible after the events have occurred? Does the banana represent or symbolize something?
Perchance the banana symbolizes a person, having an inside and an outside. Perchance it means that without the innards, a person would die. No. A simple answer, it is correct. But this is merely an eighth of the iceberg, like Ernest Hemingway’s writing style, where further extrapolation is required to discover the true meaning. We have merely scratched the surface. In order to truly grasp its meaning, we need to plumb into the depths of imagination, logic, and reason. Mayhap this banana phenomenon symbolizes not physical, but more spiritual matters. The core represents one’s morals and principles, and the skin represents the result. Being the life and accomplishment of the banana, the core resembles one’s morals and principles. Morals and principles take time to cultivate and are the bases of life. Without the core, the banana becomes very, very dark brown and dead. Likewise, a person without morals and principles becomes “dead.” This person will have lost all usefulness. Furthermore, without morals and principles, this person will not have the power or will to restrain and abstain from sinful behavior that some doctors of psychology have labeled NB, such as stealing cars, robbing banks, engaging in frequent sexual intercourse with numerous partners, shooting people, dealing illegal drugs, etc. Through the banana phenomenon, it is apparent that the message to humans is: One’s morals and principles must not be lost. As that one Englishman said, “God hast bestowed upon thee morals and principles, and thou shalt not lose them.”
