Pig Awareness DayEver since the publication of Animal Farm by George Orwell, humans all over the world have realised the importance of 'Pig Awareness Day'. The annual festival was concieved in 1972 by Lester J. Skrowgett, a pig farmer, who after reading Orwell's masterpiece, realised that he had seen his pigs acting rather strangely. "They seemed to be plotting something over by the water trough. They appeared to be drinking but I could see them twitching their tails in some sort of code. Naturally, I fled my farm and let them take over, so as not to be attacked or killed by the unlikely geniuses," he told in his famous Man vs. Ham interview. "The pigs of the world are becoming craftier. You have to watch out for signs such as squeals that sound like 'We're the true rulers of the world' or even pigs trying to communicate using primitive can and string phones," said the self-proclaimed PorkWatcher tm. The Festival, which is on the 27th of October, marks the 30th anniversary of the event. People will be participating in fund raising events such as 'Bacon Eating Marathons' where contestants eat their way through the enemy and also 'Bob Hamples' which involves youngsters trying to eat ham coated apples on strings without the use of their hands. Last years celebrations were hampered by the secretive cult, the "Rasherites" who claim that bacon is sacred and flying pigs rule the heavens. More about them soon in our exclusive in-depth report. ITV1 will also be screening a one off special called 'I'm a celebrity pig, get me out of here!' in which such celebrity hogs as Jade from Big Brother and Kevin Bacon will be locked in an electric-fenced pig pen for seven days with only each other for snacks.
