Not fabulous but still a keeper!
Not near as pretty as some of them, but never the less, it didn't go back to the rock pile. They come in all sizes and shapes, some just prettier than the others.
Quiz Time! What Do You See Here?
Now most would just see a "plain Jane"! Not me! See the individual different colored lines? See the darker red spot in the center? Notice the texture of the rock. Isn't the texture different than most rocks you see? This is one of the textures you are looking for. This one is (you guessed it)completely untouched. Its as I found it. This is one of those Nebraska Fairburns. That red center will turn into a "beautiful eye"! The individual pattern lines on the rest of the rock, upon polishing it, will turn into that beautiful "spider web" design. Watch for the polished product later in my pages. This turned into a "beautiful Fairburn".
Ah yes, I Love Them All
See the "eye"? You are right! Another one of those Nebraska Fairburns. The Nebraska Grasslands that I hunt, start just South of Ardmore, Nebr. and continue towards Crawford, Nebr. Both sides of the road on Hwy 79, and East & West for as far as the eye can see, is part of the Nebraska Grasslands. Ardmore is just about 50 miles south of Rapid City. Ardmore is one of the longest trips I have to make. But a chance to put one of these "eyed Fairburns" in my collection is well worth the drive. A bit of caution here though, as the area is also home to the Prairie Rattler! Before you reach down to pick up that rock, make sure you know what is laying near it! Don't reach under a larger rock outcropping if you haven't visually checked whats under there! In the Nebr. Grasslands, not only do I have my "sippin & dippin" liquid, I also carry one of those 4 foot tongs they use to pick apples with, just in case I find a likely looker in a dangerous place. There is no need to take careless chances.
