Grooming Tools
Every horse should be well groomed before performing any work with it. Specail grooming my need to be done if the horse is to show or compete.
Necessary Items
- Hoofpick - This is used to clean and scrap away mud and rocks from the bottom of the horses foot. The most efficient hoofpicks have small, stiff brushes at the end.
- Rubber Curry Comb - These tend to be similar to plastic curry combs, but are more durable and softer on the skin. Rubber ones also tend to be a little more expensive. Rubber curry combs are used in a circular motion on the horses body to lift dead skin and dirt to the surface.
- Plastic Curry Comb - These tend to be similas to rubber cury combs, but are less durable and a little more rough on the skin. Plastic ones are a little less expensive then rubber ones. Plastic curry combs are used in a circular motion on the horses body to lift dead skin and dirt to the surface.
- Rubber Curry Mit - This is just a rubber mit with bumps on either side. The bumps on one side tend to be bigger then on the other side. Rubber curry mits can be used on any part of the horse including inside the legs, and on the face.
- Stiff Body Brush - This is used on the horse to brush away dried dirt and mud. It is used going to same direction as the fur.
- Soft Body Brush - This is used for the same reason as the stiff body brush, but is used after, to brush away the finer dirt.
- Stable Rubber - This can be something as simple as an old towel or large square of cloth. This is used to give a final rub to the horse and give it's coat a nice shine.
- Water Brush - This is wet, and then used to scrub the horse.
- Sedding Blade - This is used in the spring to shed away the winter coat.
- Sweat Scraper - This is used to remove exess water or sweat from a horse.
- Small Wash Bucket - This is filled with warm soapy water, and used to wash things in.
- Sponges - You should make sure you have several different sponges all of different sizes. Mark which sponges are used for what so they stay seperate. One should be for the face, one for the body, and one for the dock.
- Mane and Tail Combs - These are made from many materials including plastic and steel. Steel is a better choice because it lasts longer. A plastic mane and tail comb wouldn't make it through a cold winter.
- Hoof Dressing - This keeps the horses hooves moist and strong. Coloured dressing can also be bought to make hooves more black.
- Hoof Brush - This is used to apply the hoof dressing and looks similar to a shaving lotion brush.
- Fly Repellent - Fly repellent can be bought in the form of either a spray or gel. It can be expensive, but if their are a lot of bugs around, it is a good thing to have.
Optional Items
- Curry Comb with hose attachment - This is just a regular plastic curry comb, but with holes in it, and a place to hook up a hose.
- Small Electric Clippers - These are used for small jobs such as trimming a bridle path, or cleaning up the face and legs. Small clippers can be battery operated making it easier to clip.
- Heavy Duty Clipers - Heavy duty clippers are used for clipping big portions of the body. They are usually not wireless so make sure you watch that the horse does not step on the cords.
- Mane Pulling Knife - This is used to make the mane shorter, by pulling out the hairs from underneath.
- Mane Braiding Kit - This is used to style the mane is some fancy way. Kits usually contain all the supplies you need and sometimes instruction booklets.
- Rubber Bands - These are used to keep braids in place
