A few other Broods, however, have their own agendas. The Jormungund Brood, with the destruction of the Overmind under their protection, blitzed the remaining Protoss and Terran forces under the control of Araq, their disoriented, but living, Cerebrate. The Protoss and Terran forces, under the joint leadership of Zeratul and Jim Raynor were held back long enough for the Brood and its Cerebrate to evacuate into space.

In a massive battle, Zerg mutalisks and guardians blasted their way through orbiting defences and out into the vastness of space, heading for the planet Mar Sara. There, the Fenris Brood lay waiting for their return, having succeeded in infesting a Protoss mystic named BludRedd. BludRedd became the first of the Xel'Naga Reborn, or simply, the Reborn.

BludRedd, seeing the dire need of leadership in the Zerg, took control of the Fenris and Jormungund Broods with Araq and Nargil, the remaining Cerebrates, as his subordinates.
