I
still remember the first time I came to Walker Brothers
as a kid. I hated breakfast. But I did love that fresh-squeezed
orange juice. It was magically delicious, but over the years
I've acquired a taste for other foods from the first meal
of the day. My repertoire of breakfast favorites grew from
a glass of juice to eggs, crepes, waffles, and the house
specialty at Walker Brothers, pancakes.
Now don't get me wrong, I love eggs. However, when you go
here, it is a sin to not order the Belgian waffles or the
pancake specialties. It's what they're known for. Imagine
you're going out to a fish boil. You do not order a hot
dog, even if it is on the menu. It's just not right; defeats
the whole purpose of going to the fish boil in the first
place. Well, going to Walker Brothers and not ordering pancake
specialties or Belgian waffles is the same thing.
The Dutch Baby ($6.25) is a noteworthy dish to order - "*Thin
and delicate, plate-filling oven pancake dusted with powdered
sugar and served with lemon on the side.*" Not only
that, but you can order fresh strawberries, bananas and
strawberry syrup for $2.50 extra. It is really worth it,
adding that additional touch to "hit the spot."
The German pancake ($7.75) is simply a big brother of the
Dutch baby. It's bigger, but doesn't come with the option
of ordering fresh fruits and strawberry syrup. Stick with
the baby for that extra "kick" of taste in it.
Perhaps the most famous entrée at Walker Brothers
is the Apple Pancake ($6.95). "*Our very own recipe
bubbles with flavor and fresh apples, complemented with
bakers' special sugar and pure Sinkiang cinnamon glaze.
The perfect size!*" It really is good, but it's also
a monster of a pancake; I don't recommend attacking this
one alone unless you're a beast eater. Otherwise, be prepared
to take a doggie bag home!
Ok, just take my word for it and try the fresh strawberry
($7.25) or toasted pecan ($5.95) Belgian waffle. You'll
say the same thing I did when I ate it, which is nothing;
I couldn't speak because I was inhaling the food so fast.
Do not order breakfast without the large orange juice ($2.65).
It is integral to your dining experience here. It's just
like the stuff that Mom used to squeeze you in the summer
on the farm after you came in from picking the corn, milking
the cows and gathering the eggs. If you didn't grow up on
a farm... Nevermind. Just get the damn orange juice.
Service is fast and efficient. You walk up to the cashier
to pay, so no waiting for the waiter to leave a tip.
