Tour News: Placebo 13/05/03

An American, an Englishman and a Swede decide to form a band. With the peculiar alchemy of bands that are meant to be, the trio quickly found their own voice and vocabulary; a glorious noise which at once both confronts and celebrates - the band we have all come to know and love as PLACEBO.

Formed in 1995 in the heat of the Britpop explosion, PLACEBO quickly forged a unique standing of its own away from the generic bands of the time. Fusing dark rock/pop with driven guitar riffs, poetic lyricism and the distinct love-it-or-hate-it vocals of frontman/guitarist Brian Molko, the band released their debut self titled album that year, boasting hits like Teenage Angst and Nancy Boy.

Following some successful tours in Europe and the UK, as well as parts in the movie “Velvet Goldmine" with Ewan McGregor and Eddie Izzard, work began on the next record. In 1998 their 2nd album “Without You I’m Nothing” launched the band further into the international charts and into the hearts of a growing army of fans. “Pure Morning” preceded the album, to be followed by “You Don’t Care About Us” another massive hit single, as was “Every You Every Me”. As 1998 ended Placebo were firmly entrenched in the music critics “best of” lists with NME readers recognising the band in the Best Band, Single, Album & Video categories.

Come 2000 and Placebo released “Black Market Music”, which became a fixture in the Australian ARIA charts, as did the excellent single “Taste In Men” and the Australia-only release of “Special K”. Having already undertaken two previous sell out Australian tours (one alongside Silverchair in 1999) Placebo returned as one of the headliners of the 2001 Big Day Out.

Their just released fourth album “Sleeping With Ghosts showcases the band in their most emotionally reflective yet explosive state yet.. Already a feature album on JJJ “Sleeping With Ghosts” has climbed into the Australian top 30.
