On October 15, 2003 Nathaniel was born, all seemed well, he was a little on the small side(4lbs 15oz) but other then that okay. But on October 31st that all changed, all through the night he just screamed in pain, me being a first time mother thought okay hes just getting colic, but the next morning something with him seemed wrong, so I called my mother to come take a look at him, all she noticed was a tiny rash, but he was still so cranky, so we decided not to risk it to take him to the E.R. Well by the time we arrived he had spiked a 102.8 fever, and got the doctors on their toes. They preformed a spinal tap, and a series of blood work. They felt he needed to be in a all childrens hospital so they rushed him via ambulance to St.Josephs Childrens Hospital in Tampa Fl. There they continued to do blood work, ultrasounds, etc..For about 2wks we were forced to wonder, nothing was telling the doctors anything, not even the liver biopsy. So on November 25 2003, they went in for an exploritory surgery, and concluded our precious baby boy had a terrible liver disease called 'Biliary Atresia'..They at the same time preformed the 'Kasai Procedure'..(aka: The temporary band-aid)..But in the end we knew Nathaniel would have to get a new liver. He developed Colangitis, after the surgery, and was forced to stay in the hospital until December 24th 2003.All then seemed well, until our worst nightmare happened. On the morning of March 6th we proceeded to get Nathaniel ready to go to his mamaw's and pappaw's house for the day, but something was wrong, he wouldnt respond to us, he was breathing but wouldnt open his eyes, and barely moved. We called 911 immediatly, and they hooked him up to apnea monitors, and decided to take him to the hospital, in a matter of seconds, an ambulance wasnt fast enough, so he was flown via med-flight, to what was supossed to be St.Josephs, on our way to St.Josephs we recieved a phone call from a 911 dispatcher telling us to go to Tampa General Hospital, they had to get him to a trauma team asap. Still totally clueless as to what was happening we made quik phone calls, and my parents met us at TGH. My heart was breaking into a million pieces and if that werent enough, a chaplin came to speak with us, but all she said was and I quote "They've ressusitated the baby and the doctors are with him" We all just went to pieces. Well when we finally got back to speak with the doctors all I remember is them saying the baby has a massive amount of blood on his brain, my mother and husband tell me I pretty much passed out, and the next thing I remember was a doctor, practically accussing us of letting him get hurt, which hurt, Nathaniel is our pride and joy, our miracle baby there is NO WAY anyone would let him get hurt. Then it was clear up, the GI doctors said his blood was as thin as kool-aid and something as little as a sneeze could of caused this bleed. Nathaniel was in a coma, and on life support, and the next day they told us he would have to undergo a surgery to remove the remainder of the blood off of his brain, we sat and waited and waited and waited for what seemed to be a life time, the doctor came out with good and bad news, he made it through the surgery, but due to the swelling already from the pressure from the blood, combined with swelling from the surgery the baby probably wouldn't make it, and if he did make it through the next few days, he would probably have no brain left(a complete vegetative state). We prayed sooo very hard for him, and within a week, he opened his left eye, 2 days later he opened both of his eyes, and within 2 weeks he was out of PICU and on the regular floor,Nathaniel beat the odds. We knew there would be alot of therepy to come, and alot of waiting, to see how much damage was done to his tiny brain. On April 2, 2004 Nathaniel was released from TGH. On July 7th 2004 he was placed on the liver transplant list, via Shands Childrens Hospital in Gainesville Florida. He seemed to be doing wonderful despite all he went through. He was removed from the transplant list in Dec 04 because he began to do so well. He has currently started with internal bleeding. This past week (March 2007) Nathaniel had some dark stools(a common sign of his internal bleeding) so we loaded up and headed for TGH and about 5 mins from the hospital he started projectile vomiting blood..Thomas and I were absolutely terrified as was Nathaniel..we called 911 so they could prepare the ER team for our arrival..we got to the ER and they said all seem normal as far as his blood levels..but they admitted us anyway. When they did the endoscopy the next day it was determined he had a stomach ulcer. The next day they sent him for an angiograph, and it was determined the ulcer had stopped bleeding. Total he got 4 blood transfusions and spent 3 days in PICU and 2 days on the pediatric floor..hes seeming to be well now. On November 15th 2007 Nate got a little sleepy, which concerned me so I called daddy home and we were on our way to the hospital when yet again Nate threw up blood. We pulled over and called 911. They took him to TGH where he spent 1 week to the day. He got 3 and a half blood transfusions and was sent on his way. However the very next day at 6:00am we awake to what we thought would be a typical Nate morning diaper, WRONG it was blood. We called 911 and had him rushed to my parents local hospital(we were at my parents to pick up nates brothers) they medflighted him to Shands in gainesville florida. There he seemed to keep crashing every other day he was bleeding out. The wonderful Dr.Gonzalez decided enough was enough and decided to put a shunt in his liver. We spent a total of 20 days in the hospitals, 1 day shy of 3 weeks. He had approx 9 blood transfusions. 5 endoscopys, and a 5 hr procedure to place the shunt. He was officially listed on the transplant list on Nov 30 2007. Its just a matter of time now! We ask that everyone continue to pray for our little blessing..May God continue to bless him with the miracle of LIFE!!For without the power of prayer our Natey-Tatey wouldnt be with us today, and we'd like to send a special thank you to ALL of the people who have prayed for him, and also to the Doctors at TAMPA GENERAL HOSPITAL IN TAMPA FLORIDA, and the PLANT CITY FIRE DEPARTMENT AND RESCUE CREW FOR YOUR FAST RESPONCE, AND QUICK THINKING FOR WITHOUT YOU GUYS HE WOULDN'T OF MADE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Another big thanks is to Cathy Martin, Nates Early Intervention therapist. She helped pull him through so many of his delays!! Also Dr.Gonzalez his wonderful Gastro in Gainesville!! He is truely an angel in disguise
