In the spring of 1998, the top musicians on the Milan music scene came together to form the super-group "The Supersonics". Eschewing super-groups' usual weaknesses of self indulgence and prog-rock pretension, their early rehearsals showed them to possess a visceral cutting edge that owed much to early Noo-Yawk Punk, combined with a melodic instinct that saw them craft their anarchic sound into what was unmistakably Pop. Originally intended as a one-night-only event, they played a tantalisingly compact set to a select audience after only a few weeks of rehearsal. Second on the bill that night, they stole the show from the act billed first - leading to a certain degree of controversy when the audience, thinking The Supersonics to be the final act, left with the band, leaving a half empty venue for the upstaged headliners.
Even at this early stage, the core of the band had been established, but were joined for the actual gig by second vocalist Chris Evans from Alcool Belly and, on bass guitar, Oliver St. John from The Symbolics. Stefan would later play lead guitar on a track on The Symbolics' latest album. The spirit of collaboration exists within the band to this day, with, albeit inaccurate, rumours that Stefan was to play some part in the most recent Leaf album. Others thought that when Owain went into the studio with Boaz during the recording of this album that he was to guest on a track, but this too never saw the light of day. Ironically, the only collaboration to be released thus far by Leaf is that with Despot drummer Ari Rattan - the band that were bottom of the bill for The Supersonic's first gig. With time, The Supersonics have expanded their repertoire and Boaz takes vocal duties on a number of songs that have been added to their live set. They have such strength in depth now that at a recent show-case gig that drew fans not just from all around Europe, but from the whole world, they were able to play two complete sets (both to full houses). Nevertheless, they still adhere to their strict no-encores policy.
