Chapter 6

“No buts about it Sara! When you come home your never seeing them again!” “Mom, shut the fuck up! Maybe I won’t come home!” “Is your grandfather there?” Trying to change the subject. “Yeah, here he is.” I shoved the phone into his hands and started to run to Brian’s room. I walked in causally so I didn’t make a seen. “Meg, I need to talk to you.” I looked at Brian, he looked at me. I think he knew something was really up. So I silently said, “Later.” He knew what I meant. We walked to the women’s bathroom, so we could have some privacy without worrying about the guys following us. I told her about the whole phone conversation. “But that’s so unfair! You’re not gonna take that from her are you?” “I don’t know. I can’t stand being away from Brian! I thought I was gonna die on the trip here from a separation disorder or something. But you know some of the things she’s done to me! She might lock me in the house this time, instead of out of it.” “What are we gonna do?” “I don’t know.” I did have a plan, but I wanted to talk over it with Brian first. We’d have to meet in secret. After school, I’d cut my sports and say I was practicing. I’d really be with Brian though. We walked out of the bathroom just in time to see Nick. “Your grandfather is looking for you Sara.” “Where is he?” “Here I’ll take you to him.” So we walked for what seemed like an eternity. When we finally met with him, Meg and Nick left to see Brian. “What’d she want?” I asked. “You shouldn’t be using that kind of attitude, girl. She wanted me to keep an eye on you so you don’t spend time with those horny little boys.” “Grandpa!” My grandpa had been my second father. He worked with my mom so he was always at our house. “Don’t you think it’s unfair. What she’s doing to me, to Meg, to Brian? He just had heart surgery for God’s sake! He needs his family.” “Your not his family.” “We’re his second family. I can’t live without him, he can’t live without me! We need each other.” “You’ve survived over 23 years, he’s survived even more. I think he’ll live.” “I hate you!” I started to run to Brian. I needed him. He was the only one who understood me, who cared for me, who loved me, my family had turned against me. All I had was Brian, Meg, Nick, Kevin, A.J., and Howie. Sure I had other friends at school. I had a whole bunch of friends. But we weren’t as close as me and Meg. Now we were being torn apart from our friends as well as our lovers. I reached Brian’s room. No one else was there. It never crossed my mind though. “Brian!” “What’s wrong baby?” “My mom, my granddad, my life.” “It can’t be that bad. Is it?” “Oh, but yes, sweetie, yes it is! My mom and grandpa are set out to keep me and Meg away from you guys. All because we skipped class one freakin day!” “I knew you shouldn’t of! I knew it. God was telling me that. I didn’t listen. I should have tried to stop you. I didn’t want to. This is all the devil’s work, I tell ya. We can’t be taken apart. Not all that you’ve been through. We’re each other’s life savers.” “How have I helped you?” “By just letting me know, that there are people who I can help. You showed me that. You let me help when you needed it.” My Grandpa came in. “Sara, what the hell are you doing in here? Say goodbye, It’s time to leave.” “No, Grandpa, I’m staying.” “He’s no good for you girl. Get away from that child molester.” “What are you talking about? Brian is the nicest guy alive. You know that. You’ve met him. Just not the real him.” “No one has time in their life to really meet someone. Come on time’s a wastin. Say goodbye then go find your friend.” “Grandpa! How can you turn against me like that?” “Come now.” “But first Grandpa, read this.” I handed him the note Brian had given me. He nodded as to give me the go-ahead. He opened the crinkled piece of paper and read it silently. “That’s very sweet Brian, but I’ve got to do what her mother thinks is best for her. She told me to take her home, and that’s where she’s going. I don’t think you should ever meet again.” “Why is your mother doing this baby?” asked Brian. “I thought she liked me and the guys.” “I thought she did too. Maybe it had something to do with Grandma.” “But what?” “I don’t know.” Grandpa interrupted, “Time to go, sweet pea.” I got on the hospital bed and wrapped my arms around him and he did me. I tried to hold him so tight that we’d never let go. But he said, “It’s only goodbye for a while. I’ll find you. I promise. See you later.” “See ya later.” We gave each other our hopefully not last kiss. He knew I did not like the words good bye. Goodbye meant forever and never again. While see ya meant we’ll be apart for a little while, but we’ll see each other again. Soon. As we walked out, Grandpa pushing me along, we found Meg sitting on Nick’s lap, reading him an article about a new video game. I could tell they were both enjoying themselves. “Meg, It’s time to go.” I ran to her. We both grabbed Nick. Soon the other 3 were joining us. “We’ll never forget you guys,” they said. “Neither will we. How could we. We had the best time of our lives with you guys. We must see each other again. We have to!” I said to them. There were so many tears, they could have filled an ocean. “See you.” said me and Meg.
