Chapter 18
“We’ll, your gonna see a doc anyways.” We got into another rent-a-car and were headed
to the hospital. I slept the whole way so I don’t remember much. I’ll I remember was
hearing the doctor say, “Congratulation, Sara and Brian. Your going to be parents!” I
was estatic. So was Brian. He kept saying, all the way home, “I can’t believe it. I’m
gonna be a daddy! I wonder if it’s a boy or girl. What are we gonna name it?” All I
cared about then was sleep. I was pooped from the party, and I knew I couldn’t do that
again. Luckily, I was smart enough to lay off the alcohol and grab a Sprite instead.
When we reached the hotel, I laid down and was out in an instant. When I awoke,
I laid there and listened to Brian talking on the phone. “Listen mom! I don’t care what
you think.” He was yelling at the phone now. I had never heard him yell like that, let
alone at his mother. I knew he loved her more than me and now he was screaming his
head off! “I love her, mom! I’ve never felt this way about anyone like this before! I’m
happy about this baby, and I thought you would be too. I guess I thought wrong now
didn’t I. I can’t believe you mother! I thought you’d be happy!” He slammed the phone
down. I was almost scared to talk to him after that incident, but I had to.
“What’s wrong baby?” I asked him.
“I’m sorry. Did I wake you up? I should have been quiter.”
“No, I woke up anyways. Who was that?” I asked even though I knew.
“My so-called loving mother.”
“Did you tell her?”
“Yeah.”
“What’d she say?”
“Uhhhhhh.” To save him someone knocked on the door. “I’ll get it!” He walked
to the door. “Hey Nick, man, waz up?”
“Not much dude. Hey, wanna go bowling with us now. Everyone’s going. We
tried to reach you guys, but nobody knew where you were.”
“Hey, Nick. Hold on a sec.” Nick waited at the door. Brian came over to me and
said, “Sara, do you want me to tell anybody yet?”
“I guess we could. They’re going to find out sooner or later aren’t they?”
“Yeah, I guess. Should I tell him where we were?”
“Why not? Why are you so worried?”
“Just, that, well, I don’t want to do anything you don’t wanna do.”
“Don’t worry Brian. Everything’s gonna be ok, remember?”
“Yeah. Hey! Did you wanna go bowling anyway?”
“Sure. It’ll be a while before I can again.”
“Why?”
“I’ll be so fat and weak, I won’t be able to pick up a bowling ball!” He laughed
and turned to face Nick who had just come into the room to sit down.
“Uh, Nick.”
“What Bri?”
“We have something to tell you. We haven’t told anybody except my mom this
morning. And uh, well.” His voice trailed off, tring to think of a way to tell him.
I decided to help him. “We’re gonna be a mommy and daddy.”
“What? Wow! That’s wonderful you guys! Boy or girl?”
“Dunno.”
“Can I be the godfather?” He said that like the guy in the movie.
“Well see,” I said.
“I’ll let you guys tell everybody. But tell em soon cause I can’t keep secrets.”
“I know,” said Brian.
“Well, the fellas and girls are waitin’ downstairs, so we’d better hurry up.” Lucily,
I still looked fine from leaving earlier. ‘Screw make-up, screw hairspray, screw, well,
screw Brian again’ I thought, laughing to myself.
“What ‘cha laughing at?” he asked.
“Oh, nothing. Nothing at all.”
We all piled into separate cars and headed to the nearest bowling alley, which they
had reserved. Unfortunatally, we all couldn’t play each other at once, so we split up.
Nick, Meg, Brian, and I were in one alley, and A.J., Lia, Kevin, Amber, Howie, and Amy
were in the one next to us.
“Okay,” said Kevin. “The top 2 finishers in lane 12 [that was us!] will play the 3
best in lane 11. Then the bottom 2 and 3 will play each other. We’ll have ourselves a
little mini-tourney. Sound good?”
“Yes, master Kevin,” I said. He chuckled, but sometimes it was true. “All you
losers are going down!”
“You only wish babe,” said Nick.
“Whatever girl! There can only be one winner and that’s me!” said Meg.
“Well, do we have bumpers?” I asked.
“No,” said Brian.
“Uh oh! I’ve never played without bumpers, I’ve only gotten one strike in my life,
and I’ve only been bowling about 5 times in my life!”
“Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!” said Meg. “I’m gonna win!”
“No, I belive it’s me,” said Brian.
“Come on! Give the,” I was going to say pregnant woman a chance but I
stopped.
“Give the what?” asked Howie, overhearing our conversation.
“Evesdropper,” I said.
“Sorry. What were you going to say?”
“Nothin’”
“It didn’t sound like nothin’. Come on, fess up!”
“Go fuck off, Howie.” I think I surprised him there.
Brian leaned over. “Why’d you do that. You know he takes stuff like that
serious.”
“Yeah, but, I don’t wanna tell anyone yet.”
“Sara, we have to.”
“I know. You do it. I can’t.”
“Ok. Hey Howie.” He leaned back to talk to him.
“Hey, do you know why Sara physced out like that man? Is it PMS or somethin?”
“It’s cause she’s, well, she’s pregnant.” He said that in a whisper.
“Really man? I didn’t know. That’s cool. Congrats man. When’s it due?”
“March 27. I’ve gotta tell the other guys yet though. Should I do it now?”
“Yeah man.” He got up. “Attention everyone, Brian has an announcement to
make!”
“Thanks man.” He said it sarcastically, but I don’t think Howie knew that.
“Anytime bud.”
