三斗坪篇(二)     (Day 22-Day 28)

Day 22 (24-7-2000)

After taking this long long rest, I feel very contented.
There is still not much things to do in the training centre. Today, we are
assigned to watch the lab tech to do an experiment on the concentration of
sulphate. He has to filter the solution for 8-10 times and it takes him 15
minutes for each filtration! We don't have patience to watch him doing the experiment throughout and leave the testing centre at 10 o'clock.

After lunch, I go to the cyber room and find that all computers are occupied.
Why? It's because all the primary students and secondary students are
enjoying their summer vocation, so they go to the cyber room to play games!
Too bad~

We played international bridge this nite, it's not easy.

The person who don't know how to respect people will never be respected.

Day 23 (25-7-2000)

The topic for the lecture today is the three main constructions in the three
Gorges project. All the materials he tells are those facts which we have heard
many times before. Though there are not any notes distributed, I can still get
most of his words.

Sieving, grading of aggregates, casting... these are what we do this afternoon in the testing centre, and we have already done all these in the experiment of the
'construction materials' before. Then we are asked to help the lab tech to
seperate all the needle-shaped and piece-shaped rocks one by one. Boring~

A new student is enrolled into our group today. He is from the Nanjing and he pays for his fee himself. His attitude to learn is quite good. Yet, he doesn't know
how to use the Vernier Caliper.

Wish that one of our classmates can forget all those unhappy things as soon as
possible.
'

Day 24 (26-7-2000)

We continue to watch the lab tech to do the chemistry experiment. I listen to his
explanations for a very long time and can't get any valid idea. After he gives me the lab manu and I read it by myself, I find that I almost understand all the
principles applied in this experiment. I don't know whether it is because of my
difficulties in understanding Mandarin or his difficulties in making me
understanding his Putonghua with accent. This morning, we prepare all the samples for the experiment. Nearly forget that there is such a chemical called
(NH4)2 CO3.

Then we try to use the photon meter to measure the concentration of the sodium and
potassium ions in the samples. The principle of exciting the electrons is
applying heat to it and burn the sample, then measure the luminations thus in turn
give us the number of mole of the ions tested. I think that we can see the golden
yellow frame and lilic frames. However, the photon meter is a closed box without any 'windows' for us to see the internal operations. We feel a little bit
disappointed.

I discover that someone is very care about the others pretending to be speaking
unclearly. Don't know before tim...

Day 25 (27-7-2000)

We are all misled that we have the opportunity to cast the concrete samples to
test the strength of the cement. Unexpectedly, that lab tech only allow us to
measure the amount of fine aggregates used under her supervision. Then we can
only see her doing all the other steps of casting. A waste of time.

Frankie begins to manage the method of using pinning in playing bowling.

In the afternoon, we finally get the opportunity to make our own samples.

I begin to feel that the life here is very boring without any variety. Every
day, we are doing almost the same things. Snooker, bowling, badminton, table-
tennis, bridge, UNO and reading books.
Good, there are only 24 days left before I can go home.

Day 26 (28-7-2000)

That's all a sudden that I am reminded to attend the lecture this morning.
Oh, there a change in the schedule. Too bad, I have forgotten to inform
the student from the Mainland China to attend it... The lecturer teaching
this morning doesn't prepare any notes for us, and he only reads from the
address he wrote before directly. 'Cheat rice eat ga~'

After lunch, we have a bowling competition with the PolyU. The results are
not that good. Among the eight groups, the rankings of those group of HKU
are 3rd, 4th, 7th and 8th respectively. Then we find that we were trapped.
The students from the PolyU practice bowling every day. They bring along with
them the banners of their U to the lanes as if they are 'sure win'. They
'invite' us to take a photo with them behind their banner... At the dinning
hour, they celebrate before us... Too disgusting.
I think they use this way to win the championship and celebrate for it because they have once lost a match in football for 1:7, maybe that's why they are so
well-planned to win the game. However, the 2nd runner-up is only 14 points less than the champion. What will happen if our group can perform better? Will they
feel very disappointed?

In the afternoon, we go to the testing centre to remove the formwork of the
concrete we made yesterday. And nothing more. How come! We have wasted much time today again.
We decide to go to Hong Kong on 20-7-2000, and at about 5 o'clock pm, I can arrive home.

Day 27 (29-7-2000)

It's the birthday of Ar Cheong today, we celebrate for his 20th birthday. Some of our classmates use the 'mouth-piano' to present the birthday song.

Need not feel painful, cos it is easily foreseeable before~

Waste the whole day again. After breakfast, we take a rest until lunch time comes.
In the afternoon, we play UNO. Among the eight people, the last four who lost will have to offer some free snaps for those who win. Uncle Yip, Calvin, Dick and
Jordy lost the game. Continue to do meaningless things. We played international
bridge and Italian bridge tonight.

Day 28 (30-7-2000)

Today we set off for the JingZhou(荊州), and the time of travel takes us two hours' time.
We go to visit the ancient city wall of the JingZhou, the water culture of the
city and also the Museum. We organize our trip in this way as we want to have
a look at the three major characteristics of the JingZhou, namely the 'Three
Countries culture', the 'water culture' and also the 'Cho Han Culture'(楚漢文化).
Quite regret that I haven't bring with me my camera.

In the year 1998, the flood cost the lives of so many people. At the location where the highest water level in that year was recorded, a tower is built. Inside the tower, there are very few lightings. Although the dim lights shine on the stairs
which spirals up the tower, we cannot see the way clearly, we cannot see the faces
of almost all the people either. On the walls of the tower, there are pictures of the various gods. The tower has a total of seven floors. As we go to upper floors, the heights of the floor decrease progressively. Those tall colleagues are in risk of hitting the ceilings.

Inside the museum, the thing most unforgettable should be the corpse of a man who died more than 2000 years ago. It is preserved in quite a good state that his
muscles are still elastic. All the organs of the corpse are taken away. When the man was alive, he should be very rich or even with lots of authorities. However,
his corpse is exposed to all the people nowadays because of his extraordinary way of preserving his own body. If he knows that, he should regret of this ma??

The guild we employ has a very 'high' name, '肖琴'. UNFORTUNATELY, he does NOT match such a good name.

Day 29 (31-7-2000)

Today is the last day we have to go to the testing centre, wonderful. Albeit the next gp we attend is the monitoring centre which is likely to be equally boring
as in the testing centre, yet we are all longing for a chance to change the
learning environment.

Persistent to be boring and useless. This morning we are scheduled to have a look at the test of the concentration of the sodium sulphate in the additive of the
concrete. Unfortunately, the machine producing distilled water for the use in
the laboratory is 'down', the 'mini-exposion' really scared us in that very
moment. Short circuit, how can the existence of the electric spark be allowed in a
chemistry laboratory? I doubt of this.

This afternoon, we are assigned to do the '4-day' test of the samples we cast. After taking all the data, we are dismissed. What is the use of data without
doing any analysis or comparison? Rubbish...

Goodbye, the testing centre and also the new student from the mainland China, who is disappointed with the scheduling of the program and decide to change the group.
