The only Orlando native, Howie grew up the youngest of five in a tight-knit churchgoing family. It was at church that young Howie first displayed the vocal talent that would later take him to the top. With the encouragement from the community and his congregation, Howie was easily able to convince his parents to allow him to hit the audition circuit around town. He quickly scored a commercial for Disney World, then bit parts in the films Parenthood and Cop And a Half,and studied dance including ballet, jazz and tap.
Finally, Howie won his first role on the stage, as a Lollipop Guild Munchkin in a production of "The Wizard of Oz." With that, he knew that live performance was definitely for him. Surprisingly, he auditioned but didn't get gigs with the early boy bond phenom Menudo (of Ricky Martin fame) and the Mickey Mouse Ouh before joining up with AJ and Nick to form the beginnings of what would become The Backstreet Boys.

Though he can afford to buy a cool house for himself with all the money he's made from BSBs chart-busting albums, Howie's in no hurry: he still lives at home! Yup, when this baby-of-the family is off for a few days he comes home to the house he grew up in. Explains Howie: "I come from a large family of five kids, and I'm thf baby. We're all really tight. I used to have an apartment with Kevin and Brian, but I always
ended up at my parents' house anyway."
