The US Army Volunteer Reserve has selected SFC Vester Eldred Huff of Memphis, Tennessee to be Veteran of the Month for the Memphis area.
SFC Huff was born near Corinth, Mississippi in 1922 and raised on a small farm during the depression, where his sharp eye and good shooting helped feed his family.
He worked for the CCC prior to WWII. He entered the army in 1942 and took his basic training at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. After basic he was assigned to the infantry as an artillery forward observer.
During WWII he served from North Africa to Northern Europe and was never wounded by enemy fire. Even though he was an artilleryman he was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge during the Battle of the Bulge.
Among his decorations are the Combat Infantry Badge, North African Campaign Ribbon, the European Campaign Ribbon with seven battle stars and the European Occupation Ribbon.
After returning home after the war he married Mae Dean Henderson of Corinth and worked for Conley Brothers as a TV technician. He then moved to Memphis where he lives now and is retired from Sears.
He and Mae Dean have been married for 56 years and have three children, five grand children, and four great grandchildren. He attends Beverly Hills Baptist Church where he has been a Deacon for over 40 years.
Vester is also an expert fisherman and wood carver.
For being selected as Veteran of the Month he will receive a certificate for the honor, a letter of appreciation from Mayor Herenton and Senator Rochelle, a write up in the 4th Brigade USAVR News and a write up on the web, plus a one year membership in the USAVR with the rank on SFC and a WWII Victory Medal.
