Prisons and Prisoners

What is a typical prisoner? I had to think about that one. It could go either way… They can be some murderous villain convicted of committing hateful crimes or it could be someone innocent who was convicted wrongfully, or it could even be someone trying to defend themselves and committed a crime accidentally. If I were thinking stereotypically, a prisoner would be male, over the age of thirty, scruffy and unshaven, and with an unpleasant look on his face. He would have either committed murder or robbery and would not be sorry for what he did. He would know what he did was wrong but would deny that he committed it. A typical day for a prisoner would be basically doing nothing. They may do some busy work here and there, but I doubt they do anything productive. I’m still unsure about my thoughts about death sentences and death row. Sometimes, I think it’s horrible, cruel, and wrong, but then I think about what they did to get there and some of them in their final interviews actually welcome the punishment and believe they deserve it for what they did. It’s a tough decision to call. Why not just throw them in prison for life? Isn’t that basically the same thing? Guards treat prisoners as beneath them. I always think about that movie Shawshank Redemption and how corrupt the people that ran the prison were and how they could care less what a prisoner had to say. I think they deserve to be treated like human beings but they shouldn’t get special treatment. They are there for punishment anyways and it shouldn’t be like a vacation for them. I’m not sure whether the U.S. has a good prison system. As far as the security, I’m a little worried. Recently those convicts escaped from prison. Then I always hear about how they’re too crowded. So maybe our prisons aren’t that great and need a little help like hiring more guards and making them not so easy to break out of. I haven’t seen a prison on the outside with my own eyes before. I’ve seen them on TV. If that’s accurate, then they look very desolate, gray, isolated, and lonely. On the inside, a little bit better, there’s people moving around. I think prisons are to punish people who do wrong in society. They should use it to reflect on what they did and hopefully they won’t do it again.
